Walking through the Autumn/Winter Men's Collection with Eisuke Yamashita - Part 1: Inspired by the style of the timeless icon, Woody Allen
Eisuke Yamashita, Fashion Director of the magazine "Men's Precious," goes shopping and styling in "A Stroll Through Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building with a Fashion Expert!"
This project involves taking a stroll through each floor of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building . First, Yamashita-san and I headed to the 7th floor, which features men's authentic wear, and the 5th floor, which features men's tailored clothing.
- 7th Floor | BARACUTA 's timeless classic, the "G9," and its nostalgic memories.
- 7th Floor | "I want to become the kind of person who looks good in ordinary things."
- 7th Floor | In winter, wear a large coat, jodhpurs, and knee-high boots.
- 5th Floor | I've been having more and more encounters with clothes that instantly look great the moment I put them on.
- 5th Floor | Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building offers even niche items that are hard to find even in Italy.

7th Floor | BARACUTA 's timeless classic, the "G9," and its nostalgic memories.
The magazine "Men's Precious" often features brands located on the 5th floor Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , but it's been a while since I've been to the 7th floor. The 7th floor still strongly evokes the image of it before the remodeling, but seeing it like this, there are so many things I want, it's a refreshing feeling.
I was surprised by the wide variety of colors available for BARACUTA "G9" jacket. I'm really interested in short-length blousons, so this is definitely an item I want.
Given my current mood, I want to emphasize the short length, so I'd like to wear it with wide-leg pants or something similar.
I really wanted to buy the "G9" when I was a university student at the Cassidy shop in Harajuku. When I went to buy it, they only had 3XL left, but I remember buying it anyway. It was oversized and had a coat-like length, but I like racking my brain trying to figure out how to wear items like that.
These kinds of "timeless items for men" are challenging to style; they can look either dorky or fashionable depending on how you wear them. But when you get it right, they look really cool. I think they're one of those items that are worth the challenge.

7th Floor | "I want to become the kind of person who looks good in ordinary things."
I was really impressed the first time I went to Brooks Brothers flagship store in New York.
I'm currently interested in NY traditional style from the late 70s and 80s, and I'd love to wear a gold-buttoned blazer again after a long time. I'm looking for a vintage button-down shirt, but I can't find one with the slightly long-point collar shape from that era, so it's a shame that I can't quite capture that 70s vibe.

Each person has their own sense of the times, and when you're young, you might fall into a "quality fundamentalism" that focuses on elaborate designs like classic Italian style. Because I've gone down that path, I've recently come to appreciate the good points of NY traditional style all over again.
Woody Allen is my eternal icon, and I want to become someone who looks good in normal clothes, but I haven't quite become that kind of person yet, so I end up wearing weird clothes (laughs).

7th Floor | In winter, wear a large coat, jodhpurs, and knee-high boots.
This bomber jacket, a custom-made men's size version of cantate 's MA-1 type, looks really cool. It's military-style, but the color scheme is beautiful, and it has a high-quality feel that I like. I can relate to their willingness to create high-quality products without hesitation.
I used to love and wear CP Company and STONE ISLAND a lot when I was in college. Back then, they were the quintessential brands for cool Italian older men. The way they make their products hasn't changed from then to now, but now it's young people wearing them, so I guess times have changed.

I often wear Engineered Garments coats because I like their designs, but I also like this coat, which is an updated version of a British Army medical gown.
In winter, I often wear simple outfits like a large coat, jodhpurs, and knee-high boots, so a coat with a unique silhouette like this is very useful.

5th Floor | I've been having more and more encounters with clothes that instantly look great the moment I put them on.
I do my personal shopping in between driving. My favorite shops are those with passionate owners, including vintage clothing stores. I do try things on! However, I don't get detailed alterations. Sometimes I want to enjoy the original fit, and I find it fun to wear clothes that don't quite fit.
This Grenfell checked blouson is great. Grenfell is a brand with a long history, but a few years ago they changed creative directors and have become more sensitive to trends, making it one of the brands I've been keeping an eye on. I want this one too, it's so cool!
Grenfell has been gaining attention at Pitti Immagine Uomo, and more and more brands are focusing on the Japanese market each year, prioritizing a fit that suits Japanese people. It's becoming easier to find clothes that feel just right the moment you try them on, and I think we're living in a great era for fashion.
What I'm most interested in right now is 80s French Ivy style. The other day, I ordered a pair of white jeans at a trade show for the first time in over a decade.

5th Floor | Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building offers even niche items that are hard to find even in Italy.
I was surprised to see such a wide selection of Liverano & Liverano fabrics. This dry-touch, vintage-style fabric is fantastic. I own a lot of Liverano & Liverano suits, and I even had one bespoke made about 10 years ago.
The jacket has broad shoulders, giving it a classic yet unique feel; it's the kind of garment whose stylishness becomes apparent the more you wear it. Recently, we built our own sewing factory, so the quality of our ready-to-wear clothing has improved dramatically.
I often wear Italian tailor-made suits for work, but it doesn't feel like I'm just buying fashion items; I have a strong sense of sharing and experiencing a culture. There are many comfortable suits out there, but it's a different feeling altogether.
For example, if you wear a Liverano & Liverano suit and interview a renowned designer, they might say, "You're wearing nice clothes," creating a mutual understanding where those who know, know.

I also like Cesare Attolini from Naples, Italy. Cesare Attolini's work is of exceptionally high quality, and the design is overwhelmingly superb. I'm impressed that even if the size is a little large, it doesn't look strange.
I once visited the Cesare Attolini factory, and I was impressed by the unique way the ironer adjusted the iron, flicking the fabric little by little with his fingers as if playing the piano. The culture of tailoring was clearly preserved within the factory.
The impression I get from the 5th floor is that it's overwhelmingly filled with unique items you won't find anywhere else. It's impressive that Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , has such niche items that you'd even find in the UK or Italy.

My main work involves editing catalogs and writing articles for "MEN'S Precious (Shogakukan) / http://mensprecious.jp, " a magazine I've been involved with since its inception as a fashion director. I live in a 50-year-old apartment building, and my usual haunts are Jimbocho, Asakusa, and Yanaka-Sendagi. I love old things, and in fashion, I'm drawn to bespoke tailoring, traditional styles, high fashion, American casual... I have a bad habit of jumping at anything that has a classic cultural background.
To further enhance my hobby of exploring cities, I recently acquired a Leica M camera and have become engrossed in photography during my travels. My dream is to share the little-known masterpieces and fashion cultures that still remain in the world.
