Founded in 1770 by James Patterson in Dumfries, Scotland Drumohr is the world's oldest knitwear brand. The water flowing through this area of southern Scotland has a high calcium content, and knitwear finished with this water has an unparalleled softness, making it an ideal location for knitting. Although production has now moved to Italy, the brand still uses groundwater from Quinzano in Brescia, which has a similar water quality to the water used in Dumfries, for finishing its products. The brand name originates from the Drumohr farm in Rochelutton, located about 5 miles west of Dumfries, in the early 1800s. In the early 2000s, the CIOCCA Group, which had invested in the brand, acquired it, moved the factory to Quinzano in Brescia, and started full-fledged business in Italy. The fusion of Italian color palettes and sizing with the brand's original techniques, archive colors, and knitting techniques has created Drumohr of today. From low gauge to high gauge, and using a wide variety of materials including merino wool, Geelong wool, cashmere, cotton, and linen, this is one of the few Italian brands capable of producing such a diverse range of fabrics.
