A watch with a story to tell, crafted by a long-established German watchmaker.
Momoi from the men's watch corner on the 8th floor of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building recommends a watch from Wempe's "Zeitmeister" series for those starting a new life or fresh graduates. It's a triple calendar watch with a beautiful simplicity, typical of German watches, with "unnecessary design elements stripped away." Here's why Momoi recommends it…
Wempe was founded 140 years ago as a luxury watch and jewelry store, and is now headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. Since there are no directly managed stores in Japan, it was not possible to buy Wempe watches through official channels. However, because "these are watches we want to use ourselves" and "these are watches we definitely want to offer to our customers," it took three years of persuasion to finally convince them to carry Wempe watches in Japan.
Wempe is a luxury watch and jewelry store that handles world-renowned brands and also produces custom-made models. However, it also has a side as a watch manufacturer, having produced marine chronometers for ships and watches for the German military in the past. Since 2006, it has started producing its own original watches, and manufactures them in its own workshop adjacent to the restored Glashütte Observatory.
What's particularly noteworthy is that Wempe's efforts extend beyond its own business, encompassing the development of watches and the training of watchmakers in its own workshops, as well as chronometer certification at observatories. It's a driving force in the German watch industry, and knowing Wempe's history and background makes it a watch that you can and will want to talk about.
Wempe's "Zeitmeister" series offers a wide range of designs as an entry-level model, but the one we recommend this time is the Triple Calendar Moon Phase, which features a small window at the 12 o'clock position displaying the month and day, a pointer date on the outer ring, and a moon phase at the 6 o'clock position. One of the charms of German watches is their simplicity, achieved by "stripping away unnecessary design elements," and despite the complexity of the triple calendar, this beautifully easy-to-read layout is particularly noteworthy.
Furthermore, while the "Zeitmeister" series uses a general-purpose Swiss movement, to maintain higher quality and pass chronometer certification, every movement is disassembled, readjusted, and specially tuned in Wempe's own workshop. All Wempe watches offer excellent value for money, but the fact that three-hand models start from around 200,000 yen is particularly appealing. With a limited production of only about 3,000 pieces per year, Wempe watches are recommended as a unique timepiece that stands out from the crowd, is simple, can be cherished for a long time, and has a story to tell.
