Q. How should I care for and store my necktie?

The V-zone, the area around the chest created by the suit, tie, and shirt, is where you can best express your individuality in a suit. This time, we'll introduce how to care for and store your tie, which is an important part of creating that V-zone. You're more likely to worry about damage and stains on your favorite tie. With a little daily care, you can enjoy your tie for a long time.

Here's how a stylist teaches you how to care for and store your ties.

Q. My tie has become wrinkled. Are there any easy ways to care for my tie that I can do every day?

A. After removing the tie, use both hands to smooth out any wrinkles by tying it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, then hang it up to air dry in the shade for 2-3 days.

This prevents wrinkles from becoming permanent in the tie, so you can wear it again. If wrinkles become difficult to remove, place a cloth over the tie and use a steam iron to remove them.
Also, after wearing, moisture such as sweat tends to accumulate in the fabric. Hang it on a hanger in a well-ventilated, shaded area for about a day before storing it. To ensure it lasts a long time, do not wear it continuously after wearing it once; let it rest for 2-3 days a week.

Q. My tie has gotten dirty. What should I do?

A. As soon as possible, gently dab the stained area with a clean cloth to transfer the stain to the cloth.

The method of dealing with stains varies depending on the type of stain. If a stain occurs, take immediate action to reduce the likelihood of the stain becoming permanent.

■ For water-based stains such as coffee or tea, gently dab the stained area with a clean cloth dampened with water to transfer the stain to the cloth.

■ For oily stains such as soy sauce, ketchup, and curry: Apply a small amount of benzine to a clean white cloth and gently dab it onto the stained area. Repeat the process until no more stains transfer to the cloth. Finally, apply benzine to a clean white cloth and lightly dab around the stain to blend it, then let it air dry.

Many ties are made from materials that don't tolerate water well, such as silk and wool, so washing them at home can cause shrinkage and color fading. After treating any stains, consult a dry cleaner as soon as possible.

Q. The fabric of my necktie is starting to fray. What should I do?

A. Prepare sharp scissors and cut off the fuzz while following the direction of the fabric.

Necktie fabric is susceptible to friction and snagging from suits, belts, watches, etc., and can easily become fuzzy. You can see how fuzzy your necktie is when you wear it and look straight down, so trim any noticeable fuzz as soon as possible.

Q. My tie gets twisted and I can't tie it properly.

A. Let's correct it using "sagging threads".

A "loose thread" is a loop of thread that protrudes from the inside of the wide or narrow end of a necktie. It's the thread that sews the center of the back of the tie together, and almost all handmade ties have this loose thread. Gently pull the loose thread little by little to correct it gradually. Be careful not to pull it too hard all at once, as this may make the twist worse.

Q. What is the best way to store ties?

A. Choose a storage method that suits the number and width of your ties, as well as the available storage space.

■ Case 1: Fold and lay flat

Place the tie flat, either folded in quarters or in half. If storing it folded in quarters, fold it gently to avoid creating creases. This allows the tie to rest properly, reducing stress on the fabric and making it suitable for long-term storage.

■ Case 2: Hang it on a tie-specific hanger.

When storing ties by hanging them individually on tie hangers, the weight of the tie itself helps to smooth out wrinkles, allowing you to remove wrinkles and organize them at the same time. However, when using tie hangers, be careful not to let the tip of the tie hit the floor or closet dividers and break.

■ Case 3: Fold it in half and roll it up.

Fold your tie in half from the center, then roll it up from the center and store it in a storage box or similar container. This way you can see at a glance which tie you have and store it compactly without taking up much space. When storing, be careful not to bend the tip of the tie.

Regardless of the storage method, the most important thing to remember is to store the ties in a way that prevents wrinkles and creases. Also, since knit ties and wool ties are prone to stretching, we recommend storing them flat or rolled up.

Before cleaning your tie, first check the material of the fabric.

When caring for a necktie, it's important to understand the material of the fabric. Some materials can only be dry-cleaned and cannot be washed at home. To avoid causing deformation, damage to the fabric, or changes in texture due to improper care, check the material of your necktie and care for it accordingly.

Things to do to make your ties last longer

Separating ties by season is also an effective way to make them last longer. It's a good idea to have them dry-cleaned at the change of seasons.
