MONTBLANC 's watchmaking history dates back approximately 160 years. It began in 1858 when Charles Yvon Robert established a watchmaking workshop in the Saint-Imier Valley, laying the groundwork for the Minerva company. In the early 20th century, Minerva became known for its precise timekeeping technology, and at its peak, it was a top brand of professional watches that measured minute time intervals with high precision.
Its innovative spirit and unparalleled time measurement technology have shaped the history of timekeeping, and these characteristics continue to thrive today.
The "1858 Collection" we are introducing today offers a new, modern interpretation of Minerva pocket watches and chronographs from the 1920s and 1930s, which were extremely accurate, robust, and highly legible even in harsh environments, and were originally intended for military and mountain expedition use.
Montblanc 1858 Geosphere
675,000 yen
Stainless steel case: 42mm diameter, 10 ATM water resistance, automatic movement
A model created in tribute to mountaineers who are active all over the world.
Created to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Minerva's founding, the "1858 Geosphere" was born as a professional-grade, innovative timepiece that pays tribute to mountaineering heroes. Designed for those who constantly travel the world in search of new challenges, dedicated to conquering the seven highest peaks of each continent—a goal shared by mountaineers worldwide—this watch embodies a deep respect for true mountaineers.
The dial features two globes with the highest peaks of the seven continents rotating, accented by a red dot, and this design is also engraved on the case back. It boasts a complex mechanism developed in-house by MONTBLANC watchmakers in Villeret, Switzerland, featuring two domed globes that rotate 360 degrees in opposite directions every 24 hours. Both globes are surrounded by a scale with 24-hour time zone markings and also feature contrasting day/night indicators. This, combined with the Super-LumiNova® coating on the continental areas, makes it easy to intuitively identify different time zones, improving nighttime visibility and performance.
