How about some sweets and alcohol at Kanaya ?
Yoshida: I also pair whiskey and chocolate, and I often go with Japanese sweets and alcohol. The combination of sweets and alcohol is pretty standard these days, isn't it? The anpan (sweet bean paste bun) and beer we sampled today were a perfect match. Oh, and speaking of unexpected pairings, chiffon cake and beer go well together too.
Kanaya , you enjoyed the pairing of beer and bread today. What did you think?
Yoshida: I also enjoy this pairing regularly, and it really reinforced my belief that beer and bread are a perfect match. It's the same feeling as drinking beer with sausages or other Western food, isn't it? I think it's a great combination to start with an evening drink. Nowadays, the variety of craft beers is increasing rapidly in Japan, so you can enjoy the differences in taste with beer just like you would with wine.

Yoshida: Also, the fact that you can enjoy a sense of the extraordinary for this price even with just beer and bread is really great. No cooking is required, and you can easily enjoy a slightly special day. It's truly a reward. Wow, it makes you feel incredibly rich. It's nice to receive a gift on Father's Day, but since it's Father's Day, why not eat a special meal or buy something you like?
What are your thoughts on the possibilities and expansion of food, including the Kanaya pairing?
Yoshida: There are still so many possibilities. It might be an exaggeration to say there are infinite possibilities, but that just goes to show how rich the variety of ingredients is in the Japanese archipelago. That's why I think if more and more people start suggesting these kinds of ways of eating, the ways in which we can enjoy food will expand even further. As we approach 2020, I also want to continue to convey to people that Japan is such a leading country in terms of food.
By the way, this "FOODIE" is the June issue, right?
Yes, that's right. It's the June 1st issue.
Yoshida : Oh, the 1st? That's my birthday! (laughs)
Kanaya , wow! Congratulations! So, let's raise a toast! (laughs)
Yoshida, thank you (laughs). Let's definitely have a drink again.
