Why start learning golf with the basic four shots, starting with "putting"?
—I had imagined that when I joined the school, I would start by learning the driver, but I was surprised to learn that the four basic shots in the swing are "putt, chip, pitch, and full shot."
In golf, the grip is crucial. First, learn to grip the putter and "swing with small movements using your shoulders," then gradually increase the size of your swing with chip shots, pitch shots, and full shots. The theory is that you should gradually master the swing amplitude starting with small movements, and "the driver is an extension of that."
—Certainly, if you're doing it your own way, you start with a full swing with the driver. But practicing only the four basic shots is a rather dull practice, isn't it?
This is a scene from the "Course Experience Session" held in February. Participants were able to stand on an actual short course and receive detailed instruction, just like in a regular lesson.
At the school, we start with small swings and teach you how to hit a full shot with a 7-iron over three weeks, but the basics involve repeatedly practicing four shots. We also change the drills to keep you engaged throughout the 48 weeks of the year.
Also, as a free perk for the "Basic Class," we offer a "Course Experience." This is designed for golf beginners, encouraging them to "experience a course within the first two to three months of starting, in order to set goals for improvement." The lesson takes place on a short course that is exclusively reserved for the class. Mr. Ota, why do you think we offer this service?
—I guess it's to get a feel for the atmosphere of a course that you've only ever seen on TV...?
While getting used to the course is certainly a factor, the main purpose is to experience firsthand how important each shot is and how difficult it is to hit it well by practicing putting on the green and chip and pitch shots around the green.
Huh... "How badly I can hit it"?
That's right. By actually hitting the ball on the course, you'll be able to visualize the ball's trajectory more easily when you're repeating the basics at the driving range, and I want you to understand that improving at golf takes time.
If you suddenly go out onto the course, you won't be familiar with the course, you won't know the etiquette, and you'll finish all 18 holes in a blur. In the course experience, the instructor will explain the etiquette and rules, and you'll be able to "hit the ball many times" on and around the green without fear of making mistakes, so I'm sure Ota-san will love practicing her swing!
