How to choose shoes for a marathon
Yusuke: The longer the distance, the more important cushioning and support are in shoes. People who want to run fast tend to choose "light and thin" shoes, but a full marathon isn't run at your absolute limit speed and pace, so it's okay to rely on the functionality of your shoes to conserve leg strength for the second half! If the sole is thick, you'll really appreciate the cushioning and support when you're struggling in the second half.
Ikeda: We tend to think that being lighter will make it easier to move forward, but Yusuke's explanation just now is very convincing!
Yusuke always looks for shoes designed for faster runners than himself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I recommend shoes with thick soles and good support. I get asked about shoe selection a lot in Asics lessons too.
There's so much information out there about Ikeda that it's actually becoming harder to figure out "what's right and what to choose." I encourage you to actively participate in seminars and lessons to reduce your anxiety about running.
Ikeda: I'll explain this!
