[IMn Special Edition] Roundtable Discussion with First-Year Stylists | Suits are a challenge. But that's precisely why we take on the challenge. Three different perspectives on the meaning of wearing (1/4)
The three stylists from Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building who gathered for this interview are also fresh graduates who joined the company in 2016, and have been assigned to their respective floors for less than a year. We asked them to speak frankly about everything from their "first suit" to "the job of a stylist" and "the fashion they aspire to."
These three people participated in the roundtable discussion!
Left: 7th floor = Authentic casual wear - Kyohei Kawabata (24 years old)
I came today wearing a suit I bought before joining the company. I like to coordinate my outfits with similar colors. I come to Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building every year to buy a lucky bag, and I have about 200 ties at home, which my father, brother, and I share among the three of us.
Center: 2nd floor = International Creators - Daiki Sato (23 years old)
Today, I felt like wearing Yohji Yamamoto, so I paired a Yohji Yamamoto jacket and trousers with a white shirt and tie to give it a more formal feel.
Right: 1st floor = Shirt and tie - Kenta Taniguchi (23 years old)
Today I wore a three-piece suit from D'URBAN . I like the combination of brown and blue, "Azzurro e Marrone," and I often incorporate it into my everyday outfits.
What kind of "first suit" do today's 20-somethings buy?
Kyohei Kawabata's first suit was required for a general meeting of his university club, and he wore it two or three times a year. Since both his father and brother are salaried workers, suits have a formal image for him, like a "uniform for working adults." Because his family has told him to "dress properly and properly," he seeks elegance and cleanliness in his suits rather than individuality.
Kenta Taniguchi: My first suit was for formal occasions like weddings and funerals. My father and brother work in the suit industry, so I was influenced by them and became interested in suits. Seeing my seniors and customers working at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , I've come to realize how important individuality is in suits.
For his first formal wear, Daiki Sato bought a Jean-Paul Gaultier suit for his coming-of-age ceremony. He loves fashion, but suits only gave him the image of being "unoriginal," and since he's a bit of a contrarian (laughs), he chose something more distinctive and even wore it during his job search.
It's amazing that Kawabata wore a Jean-Paul Gaultier suit for his job interviews! But I think it suits Sato-kun.
Taniguchi: I'm also particular about suits, and I pay attention to details like three-piece suits, wide lapels, and even the back view, so I think details like side vents contribute to individuality.
Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building 5th Floor = Business Clothing Chiharu Otsubo Stylist, who is well-versed in all aspects of suits, also participated in the roundtable discussion, listening to the thoughts and concerns of first-year stylists and giving precise advice.
[Here's a one-point piece of advice from senior colleague Otsubo]These three colleagues, who joined the company last year, have been assigned to their respective floors for just over six months, and they've really started to embody the atmosphere of their respective floors. I hope they'll skillfully mix that atmosphere with their own individuality and reflect it in their style of dress.
When choosing a suit, "individuality" is often discussed, but for job hunting suits, the most important thing is "how the company perceives them." Since the basic details of a suit are fixed, for example, for people aspiring to work in the apparel, retail, or IT industries, we listen to their preferred style and give advice, but for those applying to finance or government agencies, it's also our job to make sure they don't go too far.
Based on my own experience, I offer clear suggestions on "what kind of person you want to present to whom."
