Kurozangawa is a type of leather known as the "black diamond of leather." It is made through an extremely time-consuming process in which lacquer is applied to the entire surface of the leather, rubbed in to create a coating, and then applied in multiple layers to increase its strength.

Somes Saddle uses Himeji Kurozan leather, which combines the traditional Japanese techniques of tanning and lacquering, using domestically produced Japanese Black Wagyu beef, for their Dalles bag (doctor's bag), named after the former US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who favored it. The bag is crafted by Toru Onodera, the factory manager of the production department with 32 years of experience at Somes Saddle.


Somes Saddle's "Kurozan Leather Dalles Bag" utilizes the soft characteristics of Kurozan leather by employing a "single-edge joining" stitching method for the sides of the bag. One side is cut and the other is folded over to create a neat, non-bulky seam. The opening of the bag, a characteristic feature of Dalles bags, is joined using a "double-needle stitch," a method used in equestrian equipment. Two needles are passed through a single hole from both sides, creating a figure-eight stitch. This method is more durable and less prone to fraying than machine stitching, and the U-shaped frame is wrapped in leather to prevent wrinkles.

The stitching is meticulous and precise, honed through years of saddle making, resulting in high durability and a beautiful appearance. The bottom corners are reinforced with hand-stitched leather (double-needle stitching) to increase strength. Black leather is used for the card slots, pen holders, and even the accessories inside the bag. The front and back panels of the bag are slightly curved to absorb the bulge when filled with items, maintaining its shape.
