Starting Wednesday, October 19th, Isetan Shinjuku Store will launch "JAPAN SENSES," a store-wide campaign showcasing the best of Japan as a new value both domestically and internationally. "Beautiful textiles nurtured by abundant nature and traditional techniques embody the spirit of craftsmanship passed down through generations." At Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , the focus will be on Japan's world-renowned textiles, collaborating with leading men's fashion brands to bring together premium products that we want to proudly present to the world.

"Kokura-ori" - Stripes that add elegance and a touch of playful sophistication to your attire.

Kokura-ori, with its distinctive stripes, is made of cotton fibers but has a high number of warp threads, making it thick and durable. Known as "Kokura-ori that even a spear cannot penetrate," it has been popular with samurai and commoners alike since the Edo period.
The reason for its robustness is that the warp and weft threads are interwoven in a 3:1 ratio. As a result, it has an extremely high density that repels small amounts of water even without water-repellent treatment, creating beautiful, three-dimensional, and raised stripes.

In the early Showa period, the lineage of this craft was once interrupted by the wave of industrialization, but it was revived by Noriko Tsukijo, a full member of the Japan Crafts Association. In 1984, she succeeded in reviving it through hand weaving, and in 2006, she began machine weaving and launched the "Shima Shima" brand, eventually exhibiting at the world-renowned design festival, "Salone del Mobile Milano."

This time, Mitsukoshi Isetan has focused on its origins. They have created jackets and coats using fabric from the "Shima Shima" brand, which inherits the characteristics of the traditional Kokura weaving and was born as a new era of "Kokura weaving." The lineup is wide-ranging, from stripes reminiscent of traditional Japanese patterns that breathe life into history, to modern stripes that evoke British school jackets. When you actually try them on, you will surely feel the beauty and suppleness of the stripes.
