Almostblack was founded in 2015 by designers Shunta Nakajima and Masaki Kawase, who, under the concept of "POST JAPONISM," express "something new and powerful" by fusing Japanese aesthetics with global culture.
The brand name originates from "kachie" (a deep indigo color that looks almost black), which has its roots in the brown robes worn by military officers during the Heian period and later became associated with "victory" and was considered a lucky charm. The brand then develops collections that aim to create "kachie" clothing that evokes the Japanese spirit, drawing inspiration from this concept.
For its third season since its debut, the Fall/Winter 2016 collection draws inspiration from the works and performances of the avant-garde art group "Gutai," led by artist Saburo Murakami. The collection features items that express a unique worldview, including knitwear and coats with meticulous attention to cutting and silhouette, and products that mix culture with logos and graphics.
