"I was looking through Marinella's archives, which we had gathered for the 100th-anniversary event, with buyer Sato. There, we found a tie made in 1955, a 24-ounce British-made printed silk tie. We decided to reproduce it, and we faithfully recreated it from the fabric up. The wide end of the tie at that time was 8.5 cm, 0.5 mm narrower than the current one. Conversely, the narrow end was a little wider."
The reissued tie, sold exclusively at Isetan Men's, remains popular. The tie, approximately 140cm long, has also garnered unexpected positive feedback, with some finding it ideal for men in the 160cm height range. How to tie a Marinella tie properly?
"First, try tying a plain knot 50 times. The tie will naturally stretch as you use it. When that happens, tie a Windsor knot and adjust the length. In any case, we think the best look is when the wide and narrow ends are the same length and just slightly overlap the belt. Try tying it in front of a mirror and adjust as you go."
Maurizio, who says Marinella's journey in Japan is intertwined with Isetan, is at the Naples store from 6:30 a.m. every day. He also participates in the morning meeting before the store opens when events are held at Isetan, and greets customers together with other stylists. He is a man who has received a cultural award in Italy, but there is no ego to be found in him. What is felt is consideration for others.
"A tie is a way of expressing respect for others. In modern times, there are fewer occasions where a tie is necessary. Fashion is becoming more liberalized. We live in an era where it's acceptable to attend the opera in jeans. That's precisely why I think a tie exists as a way to express respect for others and for the situation."
In Thailand, where respect for others can be shown without words, and especially in the finest Thai cuisine, that respect is sure to be received with even greater appreciation.
Maurizio Marinella
The third-generation owner of Marinella, founded in Naples, Italy in 1914. Marinella's signature handmade ties use heavy-ounce printed silk from England, which has a unique firmness while remaining soft and wrinkle-resistant. Inheriting tradition, the company strictly adheres to the meticulous, old-fashioned handmade tailoring by skilled craftsmen. The ties, which incorporate advanced techniques such as the seven-fold construction, offer an exceptional feel when worn. They are famous for being favored by successive Italian presidents, as well as former US President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
