What role can "tableware" play in our daily lives?
Currently, the cubic exhibition space SI (Store Identity) , located on four floors of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , is exhibiting and selling (partially) installations by Toyosai Matsubayashi, the 16th generation of Asahi-yaki pottery.
"To expand the concept of the tea bowl, both physically and conceptually."
The "chawan" (tea bowl) is a symbol of the aesthetic sensibilities of renowned tea masters such as Sen no Rikyu and Kobori Enshu. By removing the "use" aspect of "tea," we created "wan," a bowl that symbolizes what is embodied in the chawan.
*Starting August 7th (Wednesday), we will also be exhibiting and selling photographs of Mr. Matsubayashi's work taken by photographer Junpei Osugi, who is also a friend of Mr. Matsubayashi.
“Yin Yang”
"Yin and Yang" is an important concept that underlies Japanese culture. Yin transforms into Yang, and Yang transforms into Yin. I have expressed "Yin and Yang," which constantly changes and constitutes the world as two sides of the same coin, in my artwork using black and white monochrome and gold and silver.
“Murorei”
Japanese cultural "shitsurai" (interior decoration) is an installation that unfolds on the standardized scale of tatami mats. By placing "objects" in an empty space, that space becomes special. It is something that constantly changes according to the season, the event, and the guests being received. This space was constructed based on the "shitsurai" of a traditional tea room.
“Modern Living”
What kind of home will be truly representative of Japan in the future? One where "things" fill the heart. Not because of luxury or trends, but because you are drawn to those "things." Asahi-yaki believes that our "Modern Living" of the future will start with such "things."
