--What is the motto for your lessons with Watanabe-san at Double Eagle?

Watanabe: We aim to provide lessons that are easy for customers to see, understand, and visualize. In addition to observing your swing and giving advice, we also use data from "TrackMan," the world's most accurate radar ball flight measurement device used by 1,000 top tour players worldwide to analyze their swings, to explain things using objective numerical data.

--It's great that the Double Eagle lesson rooms are private and not visible to other people. What kind of problems do people who take lessons usually have?

Watanabe: The most common concern for both men and women is "driving distance." Many people bring their own clubs with them, saying, "I want you to take a look at the clubs I'm currently using." Along with correcting their form, I also advise them on choosing new clubs.

Mayumi Ogura, media representative for Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building took the trial lesson, saying, "Golf is a sport where you can make friends with the people you play with, and it's something you can start as an adult, so I became interested in it."

The conversation started with a discussion about fitting golf clubs, and I was persuaded by the pro's words, "Let's actually try hitting some balls," to take a lesson. Since clubs and shoes are provided, it truly is a "hands-free lesson."

What aspects of the form do you check, Mr. Ogura Watanabe?

A common concern with Watanabe 's swing form is, "My swing is unstable at the top, so I want to correct my backswing." Since "the backswing is preparation for impact," I have him actually swing the club to see how he lifts it—whether he's using his arms or his core—and I also refer to the TrackMan data to give him advice. Watanabe , you have a really nice swing. Did you take golf lessons in the past?

I took lessons for a year when I was in the second grade of elementary school in Kokura . It was right when Ai Miyazato was at her peak. I used to play on the course back then, but I remember thinking, "Why do I have to walk so much?" (laughs). I played basketball when I was a student, so it's been about 20 years since I last held a club.

Watanabe : It seems the body really does remember. For example, people who are concerned about their backswing tend to focus on individual parts within the sequence of movements. In lessons, we work with the client to confirm and correct the "whole and parts"—the balance between the whole and the details.

It's fun to swing a club again after a long time. I set up and swung in my own style, but getting tips from a pro and being praised motivates me (laughs). And that leads to having fun.

Watanabe Ogura's form is truly beautiful. Her core strength is excellent, and you can tell she's an experienced golfer. It's been a while since she last played, but I hope she continues playing in the future.
