Discover the allure of antique jewelry, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship unmatched in modern times, aged over 100 years. VIA Limited-Time Promotion at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store
Antique jewelry refers to jewelry that is more than 100 years old.
Antique jewelry, admired by enthusiasts worldwide, comes in many varieties and styles, but can be broadly categorized into those made in Europe and those made in America. While "jewelry" is something everyone can easily enjoy today, over 100 years ago, when antique jewelry was produced, it was a special item that only "nobility" could wear as a symbol of power and status. Therefore, it often uses the finest gemstones of the era and features delicate techniques and designs that cannot be replicated with modern technology.
The greatest appeal and reason why antique jewelry is so beloved is that each piece reflects the era and historical background of the country in which it was made, resulting in a unique beauty and distinctive craftsmanship.
From November 3rd (Wed) to November 16th (Tue), the dress shirts and ties section on the 2nd floor of the main building of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store will be hosting a limited-time promotion for VIA antique jewelry. This is a rare opportunity to see a wide selection of antique jewelry from VIA, a member of the British art and antique dealers' association "LAPADA," which conducts buying trips to Europe 4-5 times a year, mainly in the UK and France.
While there are enthusiasts in Japan who are captivated by the world of antique jewelry, we wanted to introduce its charm to even more people and inspire them to incorporate it into their own collections as favorite jewelry. This is why we decided to hold this promotion.
Therefore, in this feature article, we asked Kikuko Kiyama, who is in charge of purchasing at Vaia, to talk about the appeal of antique jewelry.
Over 100 years have passed, and these pieces possess a unique charm that newer items cannot replicate, thanks to their beautiful craftsmanship and techniques that are no longer seen today, the stones and cuts characteristic of that era, and the designs stemming from their historical background. Ultimately, it is the truly exceptional pieces that continue to shine and endure into the present day.
The sense of style and harmony that arises from the fusion of something with a long history and cutting-edge fashion is perhaps the greatest appeal of antique jewelry.
●What do you value most when purchasing goods?
For about 32 years, I have been sourcing antiques, mainly from the UK and France. Encountering antiques, created with various thoughts and feelings in different eras, and whose charm has only increased with time, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime joy.
Furthermore, we cherish the trusting relationships we have built with local dealers over many years, and we ensure compliance by having our products reviewed by British appraisers to guarantee that you can use them with peace of mind. Above all, what we value most is offering you antique jewelry that blends seamlessly into modern lifestyles and fashion.
●What would you like to tell someone who is wearing antique jewelry for the first time?
Why not add antique jewelry, imbued with the essence of European history and culture, to your usual favorite fashion? It's sure to create a unique world that's all your own. It also looks great paired with today's trendy jewelry. We want you to experience such new discoveries and emotions at Vaia!
●What do you want to propose to customers through this promotion?
We hope to offer you a one-of-a-kind antique jewelry piece that will enhance your individuality. We would be delighted if wearing Vaia's antique jewelry could inspire you to rediscover new styles and your own charm.
●Please share any memorable episodes from your purchasing trips.
This was an auction of Princess Margaret's belongings, Queen Elizabeth's sister, held at Christie's in London in 2006. Entry to the main hall was limited to only a select few from each country, so I consider it a valuable and memorable experience. The jewelry and paintings I purchased at that time are still in my possession and serve as cherished mementos.
Here's a sneak peek at some of the antique jewelry featured in this promotion!
