[Feature | Interview] What is the secret behind the popularity of '1LDK', a leading select shop representing 21st-century Tokyo, that attracts men everywhere?(1/2)

Ryo Miyoshi
A modern "Tokyo style" broadcast from Nakameguro to the world.
"What I pay the most attention to is the open communication, speed, and agility that comes with being a small business. We can't compete with big companies in terms of scale and resources, but they often lack agility, don't they? In that respect, we can make various decisions ourselves and move forward quickly in our own way. We also place great importance on the opinions of our shop staff who deliver messages directly to our customers."
1LDK, an independent select shop, opened in Nakameguro, Tokyo, in 2008. While Nakameguro is now a thriving area, mainly for restaurants and bars, in terms of fashion, there were only a few popular core shops scattered along the Meguro River. Furthermore, 1LDK set up shop in an area that was a fashion wasteland, with "there was a girls' bar in the building across the street (laughs)." For a while after opening, customers were few and far between, and "there was a long period when we only had five customers a day if it rained," he recalls. The reason why 1LDK has become such a popular select shop that leads the scene in Tokyo is not only because of the appeal of its products, but also because of the attitude that he has maintained, as he described at the beginning. And that philosophy is a tradition that has been passed down from the predecessors who laid the foundation of the shop long before Mr. Miyoshi became the director.

"I joined the company about a year after it opened. My boss at the time always told me, 'Always think about what the customers want.' I was greatly influenced by him in terms of aesthetics, and he was very strict about basic things like cleaning. Not neglecting the basics and becoming someone who can 'notice' things is something like our company motto."
With a keen sense of what the times and customers are looking for, and a fresh perspective that redefines the standards of menswear, this shop's offerings have synchronized with the popularity of the fashion magazine "POPEYE," and it can be said that it has firmly established itself as the "Tokyo standard." Starting in Nakameguro, it has steadily expanded its field to Nagoya, Sapporo, Aoyama in Tokyo, Paris, and Seoul.
