The name "Henley neck" is said to have originated from the shirts worn by participants in the Henley Royal Regatta, a boat race held on the River Thames in London, England.
The most common design of a shirt has an opening (placket) in the center that extends to about the chest, with the front placket fastened with buttons or ties.
