I want to choose a material that suits the occasion and my outfit.

Also, although this distinction is becoming less common these days, just as there are guidelines for formal, business, and casual dress shoes, there are also "appropriate occasions" for each type of cufflinks.

For example, with formal attire such as morning suits or tailcoats, silver-framed rings made of mother-of-pearl or pearls that are as inconspicuous as possible are appropriate. For tuxedos, gold-framed rings made of glossy black onyx are ideal, but if the occasion is not one that requires strict formality, you can wear something more flamboyant.

On the other hand, for funerals, it's best not to wear cufflinks at all, or if you do, choose small, black, non-shiny ones like jet (blackened fossilized tree trunks). Some say pearls, which symbolize tears, or crystal, one of Japan's national stones, are also acceptable, but the key is to wear something understated.
If you're unsure whether the cufflinks you want to wear are appropriate for the occasion and your outfit, please consult a stylist.

In business settings, having small, understated items in round or square shapes with subdued materials and patterns can be very useful.
Paying attention to one's appearance without being overly fashionable or drawing negative attention will help create the impression of being "someone who is sincere in their work."

Furthermore, it's important to match not only your clothes, but also the material and color of your watch and strap as much as possible. For example, pairing a silver-cased watch with a black band with gold cufflinks doesn't go well with the colors, so it's better to stick to one of the colors.

To ensure you can continue using it for a long time, the storage location is actually crucial.

Finally, let's talk about care and storage. Cufflinks are made from delicate materials such as precious metals, stones, and enamel, so please pay attention to the following points.

① Store in a cool, dark place = a place away from direct sunlight.
② Excessive humidity is bad, but so is excessive dryness.
③ Store individual items with as much space between them as possible.
④ Occasionally clean with tools specifically designed for that material.

After use, don't just leave them lying around. Store them in a dedicated accessory case, or if that's not available, put them in small drawstring bags, one pair at a time, to prevent discoloration and breakage. This will also allow them to be used for generations.

Once you realize that cufflinks enhance not only your wrists but your entire outfit, your interest in them will likely increase even further. Treat them with care and let them express your individuality through the cuffs of your dress shirts.
