A. Lange & Söhne traces its roots back to a watchmaking workshop founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, then part of the Kingdom of Saxony. After a period of dormancy due to nationalization during the division of Germany after World War II, the company was revived in 1990 by Walter Lange, the fourth generation of the founding family.
Subsequently, the four models released as the first collection in 1994—the "Lange 1," "Saxonia," "Tourbillon 'Pour le Mérite'," and "Arcade"—were met with great enthusiasm from watch enthusiasts worldwide. Three of these collections, excluding the "Arcade," remain the brand's core models to this day.

"Lange 1" 3,834,000 yen
18K rose gold case: 38.5mm diameter, oversized date display, approximately 72-hour power reserve, 3 ATM water resistance, manual winding.
The "Lange 1," bearing the brand's name, is a model that, like the pocket watches of yesteryear, features the traditional Glashütte watchmaking style. Its most notable features include the three-quarter plate introduced by Adolf Lange in 1864 and the screw-down gold chatons. The beautiful movement visible through the case back boasts a level of craftsmanship that captivates even those who aren't watch enthusiasts.
The off-center layout, where each display on the dial is positioned without overlapping, and the oversized date at the 2 o'clock position are innovative elements unique to the Lange 1. This design, based on geometric elements, remains timeless even more than 20 years after its release.

"Lange 1 Moon Phase" ¥4,957,200
18K rose gold case: 38.5mm, oversized date, moon phase, approximately 72-hour power reserve, 3 ATM water resistance, manual winding.
The "Lange 1 Moonphase," which features a moon phase mechanism, is another highly popular model. Although it was added to the collection in 2002, it underwent a complete redesign, including the movement, at SIHH in 2017.
The moon phase display, integrated with the day/night indicator, shows the moon floating in the sky that actually represents day and night, with a light blue sky background during the day and a dark blue starry sky background at night. Only a select few luxury watches can visually convey the passage of a day, not just through the hour and minute hands.

"Zeitwerk Striking Time" 13,046,400 yen
18K white gold case: 44.2mm diameter, hammer strikes every 15 minutes and on the hour, approximately 36-hour power reserve, 3 ATM water resistance, manual winding.
Among A. Lange & Söhne's offerings, the "Zeitwerk" collection stands out as a unique and distinctive presence.
The mechanical digital display, which shows hours and minutes using instantaneous disc rotation, requires high torque for the disc's rotation. Therefore, it employs a patented, specially structured mainspring barrel and a power control mechanism that reliably controls the movement of the three discs.
This "Zeitwerk Striking Time" also features a hammer-striking mechanism that signals the passage of time with a clear, high-pitched sound at 15, 30, and 45 minutes.

Currently, the boutique on the 4th floor of the main building offers both the "Lange 1" and "Lange 1 Moonphase" models in both 18K white gold and 18K pink gold. Why not choose an A. Lange & Söhne watch for your first big purchase of 2019?
*1) Double assembly: A process in which the parts are assembled using the 3/4 plate and unblued screws before the finishing work is applied, making adjustments as needed, then disassembled and reassembled using the finished parts.
