[Interview] Hiroshi Tsubouchi x Yoshimasa Hoshiba: PATRICK's "Ultimate Adult Sneakers"(1/2)

From PATRICK's "CRUISE LINE," which debuted two years ago, four models of the "ultimate sneakers" suitable for adults are now available as an Isetan Men's exclusive. Orders will be accepted for two weeks from Wednesday, October 31st, until Tuesday, November 13th, at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building B1F, Men's Shoes. This time, designer Hiroshi Tsubouchi, who boasts of owning more Cruise Line sneakers than anyone else in the world and frequently wears 16 pairs, and Yoshimasa Hoshiba, who supervised the creation of these special sneakers, discuss the sneakers with genuine crocodile leather on the heel, which they assert are "worth waiting approximately three months for after ordering."

The dress code for cruises is generally "elegant casual."

Patrick, a French brand with over 120 years of history, is known for its sneakers that have a strong presence, characterized by their witty designs and color schemes. However, the "Cruise Line," a collaboration between Hiroshi Tsubouchi, who has been designing for Patrick for over 30 years, and Yoshimasa Hoshiba, who loves sea travel, is simple yet elegant. The first collection, which debuted two years ago, was based on the concept of "making it easier for people to enjoy sea travel to spend time on board and to enjoy sightseeing at ports of call," and features a thick sole and insole with a cup insole that makes them comfortable even when worn for long periods of time. The soft feel that you wouldn't expect from their heavy appearance is also an attraction, and each production run repeatedly sells out immediately.

Sneakers: ¥64,800 each. Delivery: Approximately 3 months later.

The concept of "a cruise line that suits sea travel" remains unchanged, and Mr. Hoshiba commented, "The current standard for cruise travel style is elegant casual. Patrick's cruise line is designed to be an elegant sneaker that can be worn with trousers and also goes well with jackets and suits."

These "ultimate adult sneakers," which will be unavailable once this order period is missed, feature leather from the renowned French leather manufacturer Annonay on the upper. Furthermore, the heel part uses real crocodile leather, which "both sides agreed on perfectly," resulting in a stylish pair of shoes (available in 4 color variations) that looks great from every angle.

A design that appears simple at first glance, but is meticulously calculated (Hoshiba)

Hoshiba's model is finally finished! It's even cooler than I imagined. It has such a great look that it's hard to choose which one to get.
Tsubouchi: The shoes turned out even more luxurious than I expected . They're perfect. By using genuine crocodile leather on the heel, they maintain their simple and elegant design while exuding a sense of luxury.
In addition to the excellent balance of the "thick sole + protruding edge" form of Hoshiba's first collection, the addition of real crocodile leather to the heel was definitely the right choice.

Tsubouchi: Looking at the Cruise Line again like this, it's a truly innovative sneaker that sports manufacturers couldn't create. The original pattern has the feel of a leather shoe, the sole is original, and Mr. Hoshiba's comment, "It's okay for sneakers to have a welt," which was made when we were prototyping the first collection, has also become a distinctive design feature.
Hoshiba: That's the beauty of the design. It looks simple at first glance, but it's incredibly well-calculated.
When Tsubouchi designs, he always keeps "Patrick-ness" in mind, and the Cruise line is finished in Patrick's characteristic slim and smart style. The upper uses high-quality leather from the French company Annonay, which ages beautifully, and the unique sheen that only this leather can produce is special.

The minimalist design with no stitching makes these shoes perfect for adults (Tsubouchi)

Today I've been wearing the first collection of Cruise Line shoes, which I've been using for two years, but lately I've been thinking, "I want something that's a step further, something that's uniquely me."
Tsubouchi, what were your feelings at that time?
I enjoy shopping and buy things often, but when I do buy something, I prefer it to be something that fits my own style, and I don't want to own a lot of things. I try to keep the number to a minimum, and if it's shoes, I think it's enough to have "the ultimate pair."
Tsubouchi : Both Mr. Hoshiba and I enjoy shopping.
Hoshiba : Yes, that's right. When it comes to shoes, they need to be comfortable and match my style, of course, but I also want something "special."
Tsubouchi: So, with the cruise line, the two of us agreed on the idea of "using genuine crocodile leather."
Hoshiba: Just like Tsubouchi-san's style today, these sneakers are perfect with an elegant velvet jacket paired with casual bottoms and sneakers. If you were on a cruise, you could even wear a tuxedo without a tie and these sneakers. The real crocodile leather on the heel adds a subtle touch of luxury, so your feet won't be overshadowed.

Tsubouchi: That's true, they can be worn with dressy or casual outfits, or even a mix of both, so I ended up buying 16 pairs (laughs).
Hoshiba Cruise Line sneakers are designed to resemble leather shoes, so they look great with a suit, making them a great choice for businessmen. I personally love them and wear them often when I'm on business trips. I think they're the ultimate sneakers that you can wear anywhere, all year round.
