Expressing sophisticated men's clothing with "aged" fabrics—new suit brand CALM HILL makes its debut.
CALM HILL, a new brand from a prestigious clothing factory established in 1970, has opened on the 5th floor Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building in the business clothing section. The brand name, Calm Hill (meaning a gentle hill), expresses the soft silhouettes and the resulting comfort. For its debut season, Spring/Summer 2018, the factory has utilized its accumulated tailoring techniques to propose a set-up style based on the theme of "Relax & Move," using "3T jackets (Tailoring + Textile + Technology)." By combining high-quality materials, perfect sewing skills, and streamlined functionality, the brand has translated a refined masculine charm into "beautiful clothing."
Calmhill is a clothing factory that suffered devastating damage from mudslides caused by the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugen, but quickly resumed operations, becoming a symbol of recovery at the time. The factory maintains strict humidity control to stabilize the condition of natural materials, which are greatly affected by the weather, and employs sewing techniques suited to Japan's hot and humid climate. By sewing everything in-house, they strive to ensure consistent quality.
During the sewing process, pressing is performed multiple times between each step to ensure a comfortable, body-hugging fit and a three-dimensional silhouette. This creates a truly comfortable garment that retains its shape over time and becomes even more familiar to the wearer.
One of the factory's distinguishing features is that, instead of cutting fabrics that have been pre-inspected by specialized institutions, skilled craftsmen assess their texture and characteristics. Fabrics that do not meet the company's standards are then prepared to their optimal state before being sent to the sewing process. In this way, the fabric is "aged" before cutting, allowing it to settle and preventing it from losing its shape after tailoring. Furthermore, this "aging" process is also carried out during the sewing process. The time required to allow the fabric to recover from damage caused by sewing and pressing is considered the most important step in creating "beautiful clothing."
