Akira Takeichi, designer at Terai Craftment
"You can launch your brand and achieve your initial goals!"
--I heard that a buyer from Mitsukoshi Isetan saw Terai Craftment's hats at a trade show , which led to this pop-up store. What are your impressions of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building ?
Isetan is a sophisticated department store, and it's a very interesting place where I discover something new every time I visit. As a hat designer, it has also become a place where I can see and meet events held by other designers in the same field. In fact, when I joined Taito Designers Village three years ago, I publicly stated that "my first goal as a brand is to work hard to be able to hold an event at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building while I'm here at 'Design Village'," so I'm very happy about this pop-up store.
—Today , Mr. Takeichi is wearing a perforated suede cap, which is also an item that will be featured at the pop-up store, isn't it?
During my time as a craftsman, I did a lot of OEM work for men's brands, and when I first started my own brand, I focused on men's clothing. Many people of my father's generation wore sports brand caps, so I started making caps because I thought there should be other options.
This suede cap is designed with the assumption that you'll wear it every day, and we've paid close attention to creating a pattern that fits the head shape of Japanese people. In particular, we've made sure that the front isn't too deep and that your face isn't hidden, resulting in a cap that allows your facial expressions to be seen.

Terai Craftment Cap: 13,500 yen
— "Open for business" is an interesting expression.
Since hats are worn close to the face, it looks better if your facial expression is visible rather than pulling it down low over your eyes. The depth of the crown of the cap is a major factor in how stylishly you can wear it, so we offer several different patterns so that customers can try them on and find one they like.
I've been interested in suede for a while, and I visited a factory in Sumida Ward, which accounts for 90% of Japan's domestic pigskin production, many times before finally making my first suede cap last year. Pigskin is thinner and lighter than cowhide, and its breathability makes it less prone to stuffiness, so it can be worn all year round. We'll be showcasing suede caps, including new designs, at our pop-up shop.
