2018.01.10 update

Valuable historical fashion assets at the men's department store! Approximately 60 types of vintage cufflinks are on display.

Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building 1st floor, men's accessories buyer Yoshida recommends vintage cufflinks from Louis FAGLIN, a French men's accessory brand with over 100 years of history. Louis FAGLIN was the first in the world to invent the T-bar (swivel foot), creating the prototype for modern cufflinks. For the Spring/Summer 2018 season, they will begin selling vintage cufflinks that are no longer in production on the same floor.

Historical value that cannot be replaced by price

Louis Faglan's vintage cufflinks tell the story of cufflinks themselves. For example, those from before the 1960s were gold-colored, while silver became more prevalent from the late 1960s onward. "Louis Faglan is a factory founded in 1899, and has a history of handling OEM for various brands. They have accumulated design resources, and looking at the designs from the time of their founding, you can see that the designs were almost perfected from the very beginning," says Yoshida.

"In the 1920s, the trend was for short T-bars and single cuffs, but there were also double cuffs with longer T-bars. In French, double cuffs are called 'poignet mousquetaire' (= musketeer cuffs), and it is said that the cuffs of French musketeers later came to be called French cuffs or double cuffs. There are various stories and trends, and furthermore, the cutting and plating techniques are so wonderful that it's hard to believe they are 100 years old. There are also many asymmetrical designs, and when you look at them again, you are surprised by their playfulness," he continued.

From the 1920s, when many pieces used mother-of-pearl and crystal; the 1930s, when combinations of squares, triangles, rectangles, and geometric lines and curves were frequently used; the 1940s, when modern elements were added while retaining the influence of Art Deco; the 1950s, when a wide range of styles from classic to luxury were expressed with diamond cuts and stones; to the 1960s, when optical art emerged—you can find these precious historical fashion assets only at Isetan Men's.
