Until Saturday, September 30th Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building 8th floor = Isetan Men's Residence is featuring L. KENDALL, a renowned pioneer of British watchmaking.

The brand's history dates back to 1719, when Larkham Kendall was born. He later apprenticed with a watchmaker in London and founded his own company bearing his name in 1742. At that time, it was the Age of Discovery, and the development of more accurate and reliable timepieces was a pressing need for major European nations.
While methods were devised to determine a ship's current position during a voyage by measuring the time and the position of the sun, a highly accurate clock was needed to keep precise time on the open sea, where waves have a significant impact.

In 1759, English watchmaker John Harrison completed the "Chronometer H4," a mechanical clock with the accuracy required to measure longitude for ocean voyages. However, in 1765, the Longitude Committee concluded that it could not keep accurate time and was therefore insufficient for measuring longitude.
Subsequently, Kendall, who had been summoned to the Longitude Committee, was entrusted with the task of manufacturing a replica of the H4.

Kendall accepted the commission and created the "Chronometer K1" in 1769. When a British warship equipped with it returned from a circumnavigation of the globe, the captain wrote in the ship's logbook, "His watch is more accurate than I ever imagined," proving that a chronometer was essential for accurate longitude measurement, and the "Chronometer K1" was officially adopted by the British Navy. Subsequently, the K2 was developed in 1772, and the K3 in 1774.

The current collection, which started with "K4," features a thick design reminiscent of marine chronometers of the time, a rotor inspired by a sextant, and a mother-of-pearl dial, demonstrating a meticulous attention to detail.
