[Dialogue] Katsuhiko Shimaji x Shinya Imanishi | Exploring the world of contemporary art completed by human imagination(1/5)

Fireworks #18, 2016, oil on canvas, 33 x 53 cm
"I complete one painting in about five days. Since it's an oil painting, I have to finish it quickly before the surface dries. No matter how big the painting is, I have to finish it no matter what. In the summer, it takes about two days."Speaking about this stoic approach to creating art is Shinya Imanishi, the fourth-generation son of a long-established Nara pickle shop in Nara, and an active painter himself. His works are currently on display at the Salon de Shimaji gallery.
Imanishi's family runs a Nara pickle shop that strictly adheres to traditional methods, and the product takes at least three years to make. It is said that this is the only place that still makes pickles using this method today.
Determined not to let this historic family business collapse, Imanishi chose the path of a "painter," a career that would allow him to balance both his family business and his own dreams.
