What is "suminagashi," a technique with a history of over a thousand years?
"Sumi-nagashi," a traditional Japanese dyeing technique, involves floating ink or paint on the surface of water to create various flowing patterns, which are then transferred onto paper or cloth. Because the resulting patterns vary depending on the pressure and vibrations applied, no two patterns are ever the same, resulting in a one-of-a-kind design.
While suminagashi (marbling), a technique requiring the skills of highly experienced craftsmen, is typically applied to paper or cloth, this time, through a collaboration with Kyoto dyer Masanori Sonobe, we have created "Suminagashi Leather," which retains the unique texture of natural leather while boasting beautiful patterns and vibrant colors.

"Sumi-nagashi" (marbling) is reinterpreted by a Japanese brand.
Founded by Futoshi Tokumoto, head of the creative farm Drip & Serve, The Pis is a leather brand that embodies refined beauty through simple and functional designs. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by Japanese artisans and features a minimalist form that highlights the natural beauty of the materials.
The Mitsukoshi Isetan exclusive "Marble Leather Collection," available at the pop-up store, showcases The Pis's unique style, featuring beautifully crafted leather goods with one-of-a-kind patterns in four colors. This collection offers sophisticated leather goods that beautifully blend traditional Japanese techniques with contemporary style.
Please take a look at the Japanese traditions and techniques that we want to continue to preserve.
