[Interview] Hidekazu Satake, UN MÉTRE PRODUCTIONS | Bags that combine distinctive design and functionality

"As a factory brand of a long-established bag shop with over 55 years of history in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, we approach design from an architectural and three-dimensional perspective," says Hidekazu Satake, designer at An Metre Productions. The second promotion at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building will take place in conjunction with "JAPAN SENSES," which starts on Wednesday, March 29th, in the men's bag section on the first basement floor of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building .

The bag brand Un Metre Productions debuted last September with the "Architectural Backpack Series," a collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto. In October of the same year, they held a promotion at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building B1F, Men's Bags section. This spring, they are making a comeback with new backpacks, as well as tote bags and briefcases. Un Metre Productions is a factory brand of Ito Bag Manufacturing, which has been committed to Japanese production since its founding. This time, we spoke with designer Hidekazu Satake, who is involved in product development.

Dieter Rams' "Ten Principles of Good Design"

The brand name, Un Maître Productions, means "1-meter (ruler) industrial product" in French, and was chosen to evoke an inorganic and sharp image. As a factory brand of a bag manufacturer, it adopts an architectural and product design approach as its design concept, and aims to establish itself as a unique bag brand while being influenced by Dieter Rams' "10 Principles of Good Design" ("Less but better") and Le Corbusier's "Modulor."

Having been involved in bag production and pattern making for a long time, I've always wanted to design with a "less but better" philosophy. At Un Metre Productions, we design with the idea of reconstructing things with a simple image by removing unnecessary elements without compromising functionality or strength.

The "3 Space (3 Layers)" series was born from an integrated bag production system.

What I enjoy most about working at An Metre Productions is that, as long as we have the materials, we can quickly create prototypes because the company has all the necessary machinery and equipment. When an idea strikes me while I'm sketching rough ideas, I can go through a process of trial and error to find the "best possible simplicity."

I myself have been involved with bags for a long time and have used many different kinds of bags. Based on that experience, I incorporate what I believe to be the best into the designs of An Metre Productions, such as efficient storage, interior design, and pocket placement.

An Metre Productions' current iconic "3 Space (3 Layers)" series features a "3-room" structure with a main room, a PC space, and additional storage space, making it a functionally designed piece of furniture for urban living.

Backpack "THREE SPACE BACKPACK/UM_0018"
(30cm x 42cm x 22cm)
49,680 yen

A backpack inspired by the shape of a life jacket.

The "THREE SPACE BACKPACK/UM_0018," the most popular backpack since its debut, is inspired by the form of a life jacket. Based on the idea of "something to wear functionally rather than something to carry," it has a shape that fits along the lines of the body. The image is that of a "shell."

The material is a heathered gray fabric developed in-house by twisting the yarn from scratch. It is lightweight, strong, and treated with a water-repellent finish. A distinctive feature is the combination of this original material with the well-regarded Cordura material.

The storage space includes two zippered pockets on the front, and the central compartment has an adjustable width, allowing you to store many items. Furthermore, the zippered compartment on the back is specifically for a laptop and is protected by cushioning material.

In terms of functionality, the bag features two straps on the shoulders and three on the bottom to distribute the weight when filled with items. The handles are designed to be easily carried by hand and placed at your feet on a crowded commuter train.

Tote bag "THREE SPACE TOTE/UM_0029"

(35cm x 44cm x 15cm)
43,000 yen

Introducing new tote bags and briefcases that are more suitable for business use!

Furthermore, this promotion will introduce the "3 Space (3 Layers)" series, featuring a tote bag and a briefcase for the first time. The tote bag is covered by only two surfaces, the front and back, with support on the sides, embodying the image of "wrapping" or "enveloping." Like the backpack, it has a belt to distribute the load, continuing the design. The briefcase can be used in two ways, as a handbag or shoulder bag, and is equipped with features that are mainly useful in business settings.
