A distinctive detail gives this atelier coat a classic feel.

-- Habersack Noriyuki Koji

The coat has patch pockets on the waist pockets, and another slanted pocket that you can put your hand right through! — "This is a characteristic detail of classic atelier coats," says Koji Norihide, designer of Haversack. The "wisdom of hardworking predecessors" that allows you to easily take things out of the pockets of the jacket or pants you're wearing underneath when you put on a coat is the focus of our Spring 2017 "My Best Coat" feature.

A new atelier coat design that prioritizes comfort and ease of wear.

—When Isetan Men's asked you to participate in this " My Best Coat " project, what were your initial thoughts?

Rather than a typical spring coat, I envisioned something more like an atelier coat. I selected the materials while imagining the atelier coats worn in France around the 1940s, and the collar is a stand collar, which I've been interested in lately. It has pass-through pockets, and the overall form has a beautiful A-line with volume increasing towards the hem, and the sleeves are angled forward for ease of wear.

The work coats of that era were meant to be worn over jackets, and while retaining functional features like pass-through pockets, this coat blends classic and modern elements in a way that is uniquely Habersack.

-- Mr. Norihide, do you personally wear a coat in the spring?

I like voluminous autumn and winter coats, but I also wear spring coats, which are lighter each year. I'd like to pair them with wide-leg pants rather than slim-fitting ones.

-- Please tell us about your " My Best Coat ."

For this edition of "My Best Coat," we prioritized the image of an atelier coat, seeking a cotton-like material and opted for a nylon-polyester blend yarn with a mixed texture. It offers the strength and firmness characteristic of nylon, and is finished with a top-grain look through post-dyeing.

In terms of details, the unique way the collar is fitted and the front cutting, which are not found in ordinary atelier coats, give it a distinctive Haversack feel.

—What kind of styling suggestions would you recommend focusing on this coat?

Habersack doesn't have a specific seasonal theme, but for this coat, pairing it with a shirt or cut-and-sew top and wide-leg pants feels like the mood for this spring and summer. If you wash it once before wearing, it will have a more casual feel, and the worn-in atelier coat look will become part of its charm.

Let's reorganize the sales floor, which currently has a mix of various styles, to be more in line with the Isetan style.

Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , has a great selection of brands and products, but I wish they would pay more attention to how to present things and what to show, including the store layout and displays, to make it easier for customers to understand.

If we can convey a clearer message through Isetan's filter, we as creators will naturally be inspired, and I believe it will shine even brighter as a platform for showcasing new things.
