Not cutting corners even in the parts that aren't visible is a characteristic of the Japanese.

His father was an eccentric character. Whenever he had a day off, he would ride on the back of his motorcycle and enjoy touring with him. A leather jacket had been his trademark since he was in elementary school. His father died suddenly in a motorcycle accident when he was in the third year of junior high school. It was his father's death that prompted Isamu Katayama to enter this field. Every time he smells leather, memories of his childhood spent with his beloved father come flooding back. After graduating from high school, he moved to Tokyo and absorbed the know-how of leather at the bag manufacturer where he joined the company.

"I became independent when I was 30. I didn't start out in the clothing industry, so I initially got a referral from a motorcycle shop in Ueno to the factory that made the overalls they sold."

Inheriting the craftsman's spirit from his sheet metal worker father, he became increasingly engrossed in the intricacies of leatherwork. Through trial and error, he developed unique manufacturing methods such as hand-dyeing and complex processing, which he cultivated into the face of his brand.

"Our leather is characterized by naturally occurring wrinkles. That's why we conduct numerous tests to adjust the shrinkage and color development. I myself want to wear leather all year round, so I process it with the humid Japanese climate in mind."

About a year ago, I started making clothes by patchwork using scraps of fabric that I had previously thrown away. Since then, I've also started remaking old clothes by deconstructing and reconstructing them. It takes time and effort, but I find it incredibly enjoyable to create things that I never would have imagined myself.

His clients include Lenny Kravitz and Keith Richards, among others. The world is captivated by the one-of-a-kind charm that Mr. Katayama brings to life from Japan.
