Every wrinkle reveals the craftsman's "depth and warmth": The maker speaks about the charm of PADRONE.(1/2)

With its uniquely crinkled leather upper, upturned toe, lightweight design, and comfortable fit right away—which shoe brand comes to mind? PADRONE, previously available at the men's shoe section on the first basement floor Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building will be appearing on the Isetan online store as "PADRONE MUSEUM" on Wednesday, October 12th. This store, operated by Isetan Men's, offers a wide range of products, from the regular seasonal collection to items exclusive to Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building . This long-awaited return means "PADRONE is now available online."

What do you find appealing about Padrone?

The bold, undulating wrinkle texture, the beautifully glossy wax finish, the comfortable fit from the first wear, and above all, the lightness and excellent cost performance are all part of the secret to Padmore's popularity. These are all things that Padmore fans take for granted, but what kind of ingenuity and ideas are used in the production process? This time, we were given a special tour of the factory by Mr. Shoichi Miura, President and CEO of Miura Co., Ltd., the company that produces Padmore shoes.

Made with the same processes and machinery as mass-production shoe manufacturers, but with meticulous care.

"Almost all of our products are made under our own brand, Padmore, at this factory," says President Miura. "We use the same processes and machinery as mass-production shoe manufacturers, but our daily production is only about 40 to 50 pairs. It's a very small quantity, but we put in the effort to ensure that every pair is made to order, with manual work and visual inspection to correct wrinkles in the leather through heat treatment. I don't think you'll find this kind of thing in many shoe factories in Japan."

Padmore started about 10 years ago with the concept of "embodying universal beauty by adding a modern nuance to traditional techniques." It was very popular Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building as a shoe that is easy to match with trendy styles, and now it will be revived on the Isetan online store.

I don't like heavy, stiff shoes. (President Miura)

"There are various methods for making shoes, but the Goodyear welt method was created to withstand the wear and tear of large, heavy, and overweight Europeans and Americans. I don't think Japanese people need shoes that durable, so at Padmore & Barn, we use the cemented and McKay welt methods," says President Miura. "The most important point is that we use original lasts (shoe molds) that fit the foot shape of Japanese people," he adds.

Padmore said they were pleased when a customer who purchased their boots commented, "These boots don't hurt my feet at all," and added, "All of our lasts are original designs, created in consultation with shoemakers who have a deep understanding of Japanese foot shapes."

President Miura says, "I like sleek shoes, and my favorite shoes are opera pumps with thin soles, that are light and don't have a protruding welt." He laughs, adding, "I don't like heavy shoes, so seeking lightness is just my personal preference."

"My factory specializes in European-style shoes rather than American-style ones, particularly using the Italian McKay method and the cement construction method, which has the advantage of being lightweight. However, we also incorporate features like leather insoles for breathability and cork, which is also used in Goodyear welt construction, to improve cushioning—it's a cement construction method that takes the best of both worlds," he explains. Padmore leather shoes, which are lightweight overall and have good flexibility in the sole due to the fewer parts used, are born from this philosophy.
