Once you experience its comfort, everyone instantly becomes a "ZIMMERILIST"—Marcel Hosley, the current CEO of ZIMMERIL, a Swiss underwear brand founded by Pauline Zimmeri in 1871, visited Japan. We spoke with him about this autumn's special topics and more.

--What are your impressions of Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building ?

This is my fifth visit to Japan, and I always make a point of visiting Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building . There are many different department stores and specialty stores around the world, but Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building is luxurious and modern. Luxury often tends to be classic, but they have a wide range of products, from men's standards to top global brands, so I discover something new every time I visit.

-- zimmerli is famous as one of the world's leading underwear brands. Could you tell us what you consider to be its "excellent points" from a CEO's perspective?

When zimmerli is introduced, the company's founding philosophy of "paying attention to even the unseen details and never cutting corners" is always cited, and that tradition continues to this day. We are a unique brand with the mission of "providing the world's most luxurious underwear," and currently our product lineup consists of 65% men's and 35% women's.

—You have a lot of attention to detail that only a specialized underwear manufacturer can offer.

Yes, since underwear comes into direct contact with the skin, we are extremely particular about the quality of the materials and the fit. Our craftsmen also have a wealth of know-how in their handiwork, and only when all of these come together can we create the best possible comfort that is "more than a second skin."

The materials used are of the highest quality, sourced from some of the world's leading cotton-producing regions, including the world-renowned Bahamian Sea Island cotton, as well as Swiss, Egyptian, and Peruvian cotton, tailored to each item. Each garment is meticulously hand-sewn by veteran craftsmen in our own factory, and the three-dimensional construction that gently hugs the body ensures comfort all day long. After thorough inspection, each garment is ironed and packaged.


A dress shirt and undershirt come as a set.

--I wanted to ask the CEO this: In Japan, it's a common belief that "dress shirts are underwear, so you don't wear underwear under them." What are your thoughts on this?

That's the first I've heard of it. Wearing underwear is a universal thing, isn't it? (laughs). Undershirts are a style in themselves. In winter, wear an undershirt to keep warm, and in summer, wear one to absorb sweat and prevent it from transferring to your shirt. In Europe and America, young people don't wear underwear for fashion reasons, but having experienced the hot and humid climate of Asia, I've come to understand the positive idea that "dress shirts and undershirts are a set."

Furthermore, wearing a dress shirt directly against bare skin will cause the shirt to wear out faster. Many dress shirts nowadays have designs that prevent the undershirt from showing even when the buttons are undone, so please choose zimmerli .
