When you understand the true appeal of the "Baracuta G9"

The Baracuta G9 is originally British rainwear, but it's known by various names, including the Japanese-English term "swing top," as well as golf jackets, Harrington jackets, and drizzlers, which shows just how popular it is. For people in their 50s and 60s, it's also familiar as "that" jacket worn by Steve McQueen and Ken Takakura.


For me, the "G9" is an iconic item of Mod culture. Along with Fred Perry polo shirts and Levi's 501 jeans, it was a must-have item for men that became popular as a means of expressing counterculture. Understanding this historical context and styling it accordingly is one way for mature men to enjoy fashion.

For example, the "G9" jacket has moments when it fits the physical changes that come with aging, such as when you gain weight on your shoulders and your midsection thins out. Functional details like the umbrella yoke for wind protection (pictured above) are elevated into design elements, attracting attention from younger generations, but the "G9" also suits older generations, which shows its versatility.

I'm drawn to the fact that all the details—from the stand collar with buttoned dog-ear detailing that serves as a design accent, to the flap-covered handwarmer pockets on the sides, and the ribbed cuffs and hem that enhance wind resistance—are all meaningful details that contribute to a functional and stylish look.

A modernly modified "G9"

The "G9" shown above is a "slim fit" version with a tighter fit in the body and sleeves. For those familiar with or who have worn the original "G9," it may have a slimmer silhouette, but it's an item that offers a style that suits today's trends.
