For this edition of "Adult Field Trip," the GUIDE crew visits Fukushima, the bag and luggage buyer at Isetan Shinjuku Men's Building, in search of backpacks to incorporate into their autumn wardrobes. Joined by Ooi, a new addition to the GUIDE crew, they each introduce three different models, from classic backpacks to new releases from various brands. What kind of "autumn companion" will each of them find, based on materials, functionality, and compatibility with their outfits?

Cool autumn is the perfect season for backpacking.

While various enjoyable activities come to mind, such as "autumn for eating" and "autumn for sports," Fukushima mentioned "autumn for backpacking." In summer, sweaty backs can be a concern, but once the temperature cools down, backpacks that fit snugly against the body become comfortable to use.
This time, we've selected backpacks with different appealing features to suit the three crew members, including Ooi, a 20-something who doesn't usually use backpacks.

Highly recommended | A basic model that embodies the essence of "ordinariness"

For Oi, who isn't very familiar with backpacks, Fukushima suggested the "946C" from Herve Chapelier , a French brand with a history of about 50 years. This is a classic model that represents the brand, and was created when the founder, Herve Chapelier, saw students carrying backpacks in America.

The simple construction and classic form of Cordura nylon blend naturally with any gender or style of clothing.

Fukushima : This model is the epitome of "ordinary in a good way," making it a great choice for your first backpack, and it comes in a wide variety of colors.

Ooi : I don't use backpacks much in the summer because I'm worried about sweating, but the colors and shades for this autumn are nice, so it seems like it would be easy to try out.


Fukushima : It can be used regardless of clothing style or gender, and these soft colors also go well with Ooi-san's style today.

Ooi : It feels fresh when I try it on. The design makes me want to use it right away, so I'd like to incorporate it into my wardrobe starting this fall.


Fukushima also introduced Herve Chapelier 's camouflage-patterned mini shoulder bag as a related item. It's perfect for carrying small items while traveling or on an airplane. In addition to its basic design, Herve Chapelier 's unique appeal lies in its wide range of colors and the freedom to mix and match them as you like. Pairing the camouflage pattern with the beige backpack shown here will add a subtle accent to your outfit.

Next up was a leather backpack from shiroi. Okada, who regularly uses backpacks and was looking for something more sophisticated, found this to be the perfect "adult-looking" item. The brand is based at Shinki Leather, a tannery in Himeji, and this product makes the most of the unique texture of horsehide.
A key feature is the natural finish, which doesn't hide the scars and stains that the horse has acquired throughout its life. Each backpack has a unique look and tells a story, making it a sophisticated choice for adults.

It features a design that allows it to be attached to a carry-on suitcase, as well as side pockets, bottom studs, a PC pocket, and a front pocket. Despite being made of leather, it weighs less than 1kg, making it surprisingly functional and lightweight.

Fukushima : Made with the concept of conveying the quality of the leather and its "evidence of life" by deliberately not hiding scratches or stains.

Okada : I like the unique texture of this mat. It looks sturdy, but it feels light when you hold it.


Fukushima : The leather is wonderful, but the various functions it has are also one of its attractions. It's a sophisticated backpack that combines elegance and practicality.

Okada : I was just looking for a leather backpack, so this is pretty close to ideal. I really like it, including the smell of the leather.

Furthermore, a navy tote bag made from the same horsehide leather has also been released. Because the leather is used on a large surface area, you can appreciate the natural texture, such as scratches, stains, and variations in color, even more dynamically than with the backpack. The deep navy color with a subdued sheen is also impressive, resulting in a refined yet not overly rigid finish. This bag also weighs less than 1kg, striking a balance between the presence of a leather bag and the lightness that makes it easy to use every day.

For Tashiro, who likes to use different bags depending on the occasion, here's a fresh option for this autumn. Fukushima introduced a new backpack from Whitehouse Cox . It's a new proposal that combines materials with a British background with Japanese craftsmanship.

The bag features bridle leather, a symbol of the brand, in various places such as the handles, and the body uses material from a British fabric manufacturer. Bonding the fabric by layering it and inserting cotton in between creates a soft feel when worn and a plump silhouette.

Fukushima : At first glance, it looks basic, but the combination of different materials and the plump form are what make this model uniquely appealing.

Tashiro : I like the fresh, matte texture that gives it a waxy feel. I think it will get even cooler as it ages and gets a bit faded with use. The size is also just right, with a slightly larger silhouette that makes it practical.



Fukushima : This is a new Whitehouse Cox proposal that retains British tradition while being finished in a modern style with Japanese technology.


Next, we'll introduce a new helmet bag from Whitehouse Cox , combining the same materials as their backpacks with bridle leather. By layering a military-inspired form with British-style materials, it's finished as a sophisticated bag that isn't too casual. Its fresh appearance captivated even Tashiro, who had come to see the backpacks.


Furthermore, Whitehouse Cox pop-up store is scheduled to open on Wednesday, September 30th. During the event, they will be showcasing a wider variety of small shoulder bags and tote bags combining linen and bridle leather. Featuring simple color schemes based on white and black, the bags can be reshaped by tightening the drawstring at the top. Easy to incorporate into any wardrobe regardless of gender, these bags offer a broader way to enjoy the new Whitehouse Cox world, which combines traditional British materials with Japanese craftsmanship.

First-time participant Oi was inspired to try backpacking for the first time, thanks to Herve Chapelier , which goes well with any outfit. Okada found the shiroi, which combines the elegance and practicality he had been looking for, and seemed drawn to the look and lightness of the horsehide. Tashiro discovered new possibilities in the updated material usage while respecting the tradition of Whitehouse Cox .
