[Look] KENZO unveils NIGO's Fall/Winter 2025 men's collection
A wardrobe born from a train journey from Tokyo to Paris. KENZO Fall/Winter 2025 men's collection is designed with the image of a trans-East-West journey on a futuristic high-speed train in mind. Reinterpreting the concept of the maison's "Train Show" from the Fall/Winter 1998 season, artistic director NIGO blends dress codes, materials, and patterns to express the energy of travel, resulting in a playful, preppy style. American artist Futura 2000, a longtime friend, was brought in to create the collection's image and icons, and the year 2025 was created by combining their nicknames "2000" and "NIGO," coincidentally matching the collection's year. The show, held at the Palais de Chaillot overlooking the Eiffel Tower, will feature a live performance by American cellist and composer Erik Friedlander, with music selected by NIGO.
Silhouette and texture
British-style tailoring, inspired by NIGO's archives, is reinterpreted and revived for the modern era. Suits are deconstructed to suit different styling needs, and the fluffy textures and pastel colors create a preppy atmosphere, resulting in unconventional tailoring. Classic suits incorporate Japanese elements, and a novel three-piece suit combining a kimono-style vest with a jacket makes its appearance. Workwear, inspired by archive pieces, also undergoes transformations with the use of various materials. A wide variety of pieces are available, including a boxy utility jacket in vibrant winter mohair, soft-looking work jackets and bomber jackets in pastel colors, and a denim suit reconstructed from deconstructed overalls. Knitwear, utilizing meticulous techniques and textures, emphasizes the preppy silhouette of the entire collection. Japanese denim trousers feature selvedge detailing on the folded-over sections.
Patterns and motifs
A variety of patterns and motifs themed around train travel are scattered throughout the collection. Stripe patterns reminiscent of flowing scenery appear in various variations, such as diagonal stripes and leaf-like curved stripes, on tailoring, denim, and shirts, drawing inspiration from KENZO archives. Motifs of train windows depicting Parisian and Japanese landscapes are featured in knit jacquard weaves, shirt and T-shirt prints, and as emblems resembling station signs. "KENZO WEAVE," influenced by traditional Japanese floor patterns, is expressed in shearling, denim, and jacquard weaves on tailoring, and some pieces are quilted over paisley patterns taken from KENZO archives. Furthermore, knitwear with a unique texture, inspired by "pachinko," a childhood memory of NIGO himself, is also offered.
