"Architecture" and "Shoes." What kind of shoemaking has a housing manufacturer started? —Cajina's custom-made shoes that pursue design and comfort | Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store
Have you ever experienced these kinds of problems when choosing shoes?
"My feet are small (or large)," "My left and right feet are different sizes," "I'm worried about whether the shoes I buy online will fit my feet," "I like the design, but they don't fit my feet," "The shoes that fit my feet don't have a design I like."
CAGIANA's custom-made shoes are the solution to these problems. This shoe brand was started by a housing manufacturer, and in order to create shoes that are comfortable to wear and satisfying to walk in, they use their own measurement method to create shoes that combine three things: "design, comfortable fit, and comfort even after walking for long periods of time."
Kajina will be holding a pop-up shop at the men's shoe section on the 2nd floor of the main building of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store from Wednesday, February 9th to Tuesday, February 22nd. While normally the program involves self-measurement and ordering online, this event will be a rare opportunity to have your measurements taken and order placed in-store.
"Architecture" and "Shoes": How a Housing Manufacturer Started Making Shoes
![]()
Nabrain, a housing manufacturer that builds "homes that bring comfort to the bodies of those who live in them," has started making shoes that pursue "comfort for the wearer," and launched the bespoke shoe brand CAGIANA in 2019.
The brand name CAGIANA comes from the relationship between "shoes that fit your feet and yourself" and "house keys and keyholes," with "keyhole" (kagiana) being the origin of the name. Keyholes, studs, and ivy patterns are key designs featured on the brand's custom-made shoes.
"Architecture" and "shoes." At first glance, these two things seem unrelated, but they share a commonality: they are both deeply connected to the fundamental aspects of the human body. The origin of "Nabrain" is "creating homes that bring comfort to the bodies of those who live in them." They have been proposing the creation of homes that allow people to be comfortable both physically and mentally, by eliminating as much as possible elements that burden residents, such as sick building syndrome caused by the living environment. Shoemaking, too, is a form of manufacturing that began with the need for a comfortable body.
The brand's launch was sparked by a reality witnessed by CEO Naoto Yamamoto himself during his travels both domestically and internationally. That reality was the lack of shoes that combined the functionality of sports footwear with the design appeal of fashion brands. This was true not only for ready-made shoes but also for custom-made shoes.
Furthermore, through communication with customers of "Nabrain," we received feedback such as, "I found shoes I like, but they don't come in my size," "There aren't many design options for shoes that fit my size," and "I'm hesitant to buy shoes online because I'm unsure if they'll fit my size." To meet these demands, we created a new shoe brand that combines functionality and design.

A unique online ordering program designed with comfort in mind.

Kajina has developed its own online ordering program, "Su Misura," to create shoes that offer a comfortable fit when you first put them on and an unparalleled sense of satisfaction when you walk in them. In addition to the usual pattern ordering where you can choose the color and size, "Su Misura" is characterized by its "Personal Size Order" service, which adjusts the shoes to fit the customer's foot size. It is also possible to order shoes with different sizes for the left and right feet, sizes not available in standard sizes, and women's shoes.
Furthermore, while ordering custom-made shoes usually involves professional measurements at a store, this system allows you to complete the entire process online. It's an innovative system where you measure your feet yourself using a foot ruler set (foot measuring device) developed by the brand, and then place your order.

Normally, customers use these tools to measure the length and width of both their feet (see photo above), and then place an order online along with an image of their bare feet on a cardboard tray. At this pop-up store, customers can actually try on Kajina shoes and have their measurements taken and order placed on the spot.
We conduct numerous measurement processes to create shoes that offer a comfortable fit and a satisfying walking experience.
1. Attach a sticker to the measurement point.
2. Measure the third instep, second instep, foot circumference, and foot length using a loop measuring tape and a foot measuring tape.
3. Stand on the cardboard base and check the shape of your toes. Check if any adjustments are needed to the wooden mold.
4. Take a foot mold using Trisham and identify the areas under stress.
Breathable insoles made with "washi" (Japanese paper).

Kajina is committed to both high functionality and design. They use leather from the French company Annonay, and have their own factory in Japan, completing all manufacturing processes domestically. Combining original manufacturing methods and materials, each item is hand-dyed by skilled craftsmen, resulting in a unique color that varies depending on the condition of the leather.
The brand's appeal lies in its abundant use of traditional Japanese techniques, such as using washi paper for the insoles to prevent stuffiness even when worn all day, and employing highly absorbent paulownia wood boxes, each handcrafted by artisans, for the shoe boxes.
Why not treat yourself to a pair of sneakers or dress shoes for the new season that offer both excellent design and comfortable wear?
