[Special Feature] Now is the time for daily care of your business wear

Many people have said they "organized their closets" during the self-isolation period, but it's about time to start thinking about switching to autumn and winter clothes. In particular, suits, jackets, and coats made of natural materials like wool require regular care to make them last longer. "Wool fabric is a living material, so it's important to let it rest after wearing it. If you wear a suit for one day, let it rest for two days," says image consultant Kazuki Iwami, who will share his daily care tips for business wear.

Daily care procedures

  1. 1. When you get home, first check the contents.
  2. 2. Hang the jackets and pants on hangers that are appropriate for them.
  3. 3. Hold the brush in one hand and carefully observe.
  4. 4. If you notice wrinkles or creases, iron the garment.
  5. 5. Organize your closet with ample space.

1. When you get home, first check the contents.

When I get home, I empty my pockets completely. Sometimes I'm so tired after coming home that I leave things in them. Leaving things in your pockets can cause your clothes to lose their shape. First, make sure there's nothing in them.

2. Hang the jackets and pants on hangers that are appropriate for them.

The jacket is hung on a thick, wooden hanger that fits the shoulder width and has a front shoulder design. The trousers are hung upside down with the hems clipped into the hanger so that the weight of the trousers helps to smooth out wrinkles. They are hung separately to prevent moisture buildup and placed in a well-ventilated area of the room.

Wooden hangers, which have a dehumidifying effect, are recommended. We are using men's hangers here, but Nakata Hanger also offers women's hangers. They also have tie hangers and belt hangers, so in the summer, after using them for a day, hang them in a well-ventilated place just like jackets.

3. Hold the brush in one hand and carefully observe.

Check your jacket and pants after meals or bathing (2-3 hours later). If you notice any dust, hair, or dandruff on the shoulders of your jacket, gently brush it from top to bottom. Be careful not to brush too hard, as this can damage the fabric.

4. If you notice wrinkles or creases, iron them.

Use a brush appropriate for the material and check for stains and dirt while brushing. Spend about 5 minutes on each jacket and trousers. Be a little more careful with napped materials such as flannel. Wrinkles tend to remain in areas like the elbows and back of the jacket, so iron them if necessary.
Left: Wrinkles are noticeable after wearing for a few days. Right: After ironing to make it look neat.

If your pants have lost their creases or have noticeable wrinkles around the hips or behind the knees, iron them. Be sure to check them especially on rainy days or during humid seasons, as creases tend to disappear more easily then.

5. Organize your closet with ample space.

When hanging clothes on hangers, leave some space between them to prevent the shoulders from being crushed or wrinkled. It's even better to hang jackets and pants separately. Keep dehumidifiers and moth repellents in your closet.

Make good use of dry cleaning services!

Please have your clothes cleaned at the end of the season. You can also have them cleaned during the season if stains become noticeable or odors become bothersome. Once your clothes are returned from the dry cleaner, remove the plastic packaging and store them in non-woven fabric or garment bags to prevent moisture buildup. For delicate materials such as cashmere or silk blends, you may want to use the "Water Cleaning" service at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building 8th floor = Isetan Men's Residence. The "Water Cleaning" service also offers a storage service (for a fee) of 6 months to 1 year in a natural closet room where temperature and humidity are maintained.
Caring for your suit, like maintaining your leather shoes, can become a fun habit. You'll find joy in seeing your jacket and trousers become neater and cleaner, and a natural sense of attachment will develop. Enjoy the time you spend caring for your suit each day.
