2020.06.09 update

[Feature] Kanako Tahara and Ryo Fushinuki walk through Ginza with new FURLA bags.

Founded in Bologna, Italy in 1927, Furla is well-known as a women's bag brand, but it also has a strong reputation for its men's line. Located in Bologna, a mecca for leather goods, Furla is highly regarded not only for its selection of materials and craftsmanship, but also for its ability to balance design and functionality, and is known for having many repeat customers.

Furla has released a genderless bag in its Fall/Winter 2020 pre-collection. So, let's take a look at the design and usability from both a male and female perspective.

The iconic Furla Metropolis bag has been modernized and evolved.

Last fall, Furla revamped its logo with a sans-serif font, injecting a modern freshness into its collections. In addition to its classic lines, the Fall/Winter 2020 pre-collection will feature three models that symbolize the new Furla: "Furla Metropolis," "Furla Dual Gender Metropolis," and "Furla Giove." All three are generating buzz as versatile bags that can be carried by both men and women, as well as dressy and casually.

The compact shoulder bag "Furla Metropolis" is a popular classic model that can be carried like an accessory. While it continues to be available in the online shop, a new collection has been added for the first time in two seasons. The beautifully colored leather body is accented with a light gold chain. In addition to a redesigned logo, the use of a clasp in the same color as the body makes it a versatile design that can be worn with both formal and casual attire, and is suitable for all ages.

This time, we asked Kanako Tahara, who works as a talent and actress, to give her impressions of the Furla Metropolis bag. Tahara doesn't usually carry a lot of things, so a large bag is unnecessary for her. When we introduced her to the new Furla Metropolis bag, she had a surprising reaction.

Kanako Tahara is a talent and actress. Born February 14, 1994, in Tokyo. After working for a major talent agency, she is currently a freelancer and is active in a wide range of fields, including appearances on variety shows and a column in the wine magazine "WINEWHAT" (INSTYLE PUBLISHING). In addition to daily updates, she also does live streams irregularly on her Instagram account ( @kanakotahara ).

"Actually, I own three Furla Metropolis bags: black, gold, and pink. My mother and sister also use them, but somehow we all tend to carry the same color. I always carry the gold one. Most of my personal bags are black, but I always carry the gold Furla Metropolis. The black one was originally a birthday present for my sister, and my mother often carries the pink one."

The Furla Metropolis bag had long been a part of Ms. Tahara's wardrobe. She finds it convenient because it's a handy size that can hold just the small items she usually carries around, such as her smartphone, wallet, lip balm, and earphones. She also likes that she can incorporate vivid colors into her outfits as an accessory, and that this size makes it easy to carry around.

Ryo Fushinuki, the assistant buyer in charge of " ISETAN THE SPACE, " which opened on March 25, 2020 (Wed) on the 2nd floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku, is one of Mitsukoshi Isetan's most influential people, with over 4,000 followers on Instagram. He often goes to work empty-handed and lives an active lifestyle, sometimes cycling around Tokyo, so he usually uses a backpack or a shoulder bag.

"There are functional multi-pocket garments available, but I don't really like carrying around too many things. I've gone cashless with my wallet, so ultimately, all I need is my smartphone and house keys. Plus, for me, I consider my bag to be part of my outfit, so even if I have a lot to carry and need a large bag, matching it with my clothes is important. In that sense, I tend to be very careful when choosing a bag."

For Fushinuki, Furla was primarily known as a women's bag brand, and although he knew they had men's models, he had never actually considered them for his own wardrobe. So when he saw the new "Furla Dual Gender Metropolis," he looked quite surprised, his eyes wide with astonishment.

"The first thing you notice is the extremely high level of craftsmanship. The polishing of the edges and the way the stitching is used in different areas are things you'd expect from a genuine leather brand. And the quality of the leather used is absolutely amazing. It feels smooth and comfortable in your hand, and it seems like it will develop a nice patina with use, so I think it will appeal to men who love leather."

The white Furla Dual Gender Metropolis bag fits snugly against the body when the strap is shortened, and it looks great even when carried like a sacoche. Despite its slim profile, it has a flap pocket on the front, making it convenient for organizing and carrying small items. It fit seamlessly into today's style, so much so that a staff member commented, "It looks like you brought it from home today."

The appeal of Furla Giove is that it can be used by both men and women, so it can be shared with your partner or family.

Tahara and Fushinuki both took a look at the Furla Giove nylon tote bag at the same time. It comes in two patterns, multi-stripe and geometric, as well as a plain black version. The Giove is a lightweight version of the popular men's all-leather vertical tote bag, but with the body replaced by nylon. The adjustable handle length is another popular feature, allowing users to customize the bag to their preferred carrying style.

Fushinuki: A tote bag this size would be good for carrying work documents.
Tahara: I might use this for shopping too.
Because it's made of woven nylon, it can be folded and carried around, and it might be good to put in a suitcase when traveling.
Tahara: That way of carrying it seems convenient. The colors and patterns are cute, so you can carry it like an accessory. I usually wear simple clothes.
Fushinuki , I hear you usually wear Furla Metropolis as an accessory.
This is an older model from before Tahara's release, but I've been pairing the gold version with a black dress.

Fushinuki, today's Furla Metropolis also has a light gold chain, doesn't it? It's an elegant yellow gold, so it's not too flashy and seems easy to match with both dressy and casual outfits. It looked great with today's denim style too.
Tahara: It's perfect for formal parties, but also great for casual outings to the neighborhood restaurants, so it's really convenient. The new design is so cute, especially with the clasp being the same color as the bag.
The logo for the buckle fasteners has also changed in font from before.
Tahara, you're right. My Furla Metropolis has the old logo, so it might have a more classic look.
The modern and utilitarian design, along with the Fushinuki logo, truly symbolizes the current era. Italian-made bags are known for their excellent craftsmanship and design, but it's surprisingly difficult to find bags that also offer such functionality.

Tahara: Women tend to carry bags as accessories, so they care about the size, but they've never really thought about functionality. But I just learned that the Furla Metropolis can also be used as a bag-in-bag.
The Furla Dual Gender Metropolis bag can also be carried as a clutch bag by removing the shoulder strap.
A Tahara clutch bag seems like something even women could carry. It would be perfect for a party, wouldn't it? And carrying two of them together is also a good idea, right?
Fushinuki , you're right, a Boston bag paired with a Furla Metropolis, or a tote bag paired with a Furla Dual Gender Metropolis, might look good.
Because Tahara's design is simple, it seems like it would go well with any bag. I think it would match any of the bags I own.

It looks like it could easily fit an iPad mini, so the fact that it could be used for business purposes is a great advantage.
The fact that Tahara can be worn in a wide range of situations and with a variety of styles is a great point for both men and women.
I realized again that since the Fushinuki bag is unisex, it can be used in many ways, such as by having family members carry it like Ms. Tahara, or by sharing it with a partner.
Tahara: That's so true. I'm starting to want a fourth one (lol).
