Keiki Asami (hereinafter, Asami): Today, I'd like to hear your frank opinions on White Day gifts, so thank you in advance. What kind of sweets do you all like?
Kana Miyata (hereinafter, Miyata): I love pistachio-flavored sweets. I always buy pistachio flavored items, such as the shortbread sandwiches from Echire Patisserie au Beurre, the macarons from Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki Paris, and the ganache chocolates from Jean-Paul Hévin.
Nagisa Uehara (hereinafter, Uehara): I've always loved sweets, and even now, when I finish a project at work, I treat myself by buying sweets and Japanese confectionery at the food floor of Isetan. I'm in charge of a floor that targets millennials, so I try to keep up with trends and fads as much as possible, and thanks to that, I tend to notice trendy sweets and sweets with cute packaging.
Yamazaki Erika (hereinafter, Yamazaki): When the packaging is nice, you just can't help but pick it up, right? I like Holländische Kakaostube, and I often buy the mini size as a gift when I go to my parents' house. The citron flavor was a big hit recently.

When choosing a Valentine's Day gift, I'm already thinking about what gift I'll give in return.
Miyata: To be honest, when I give my boyfriend a Valentine's Day gift, I start thinking about White Day too (laughs). I get excited wondering what he'll give me.

Uehara , I totally understand! You start thinking about it even when you're choosing a gift yourself, right?
I think women, like Yamazaki , choose Valentine's Day gifts with White Day gifts in mind to some extent. If the gift is too expensive, it might make the recipient feel obligated, so they choose while considering whether it's too pushy or excessive.
They say Miyata gets triple the payback, right? (laughs)
Uehara is really looking forward to receiving a gift from her crush!
It's a little scary to hear the honest opinions of the Asami women (laughs), but it's a good opportunity. So, let's get straight to it: tell us about the gift you were happiest to receive in return from your significant other.
What I hope for from my significant other is a gift that makes me feel that the other person is thinking of me and showing me their consideration.
Yamazaki: It's nice when someone puts effort into something for you, isn't it? I have fond memories of the pound cake he gave me... To be honest, it wasn't really my favorite flavor (laughs). But he was so busy that I often wondered when he would have time to go buy it, so I was really happy that he went out of his way to buy it for me during his free time.

Uehara , that's a wonderful story! I was so happy when my boyfriend remembered something I casually said about Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki Paris while we were walking through the basement of Isetan Shinjuku, and that he gave me some as a White Day present. I was touched that he remembered such a small comment, and since I hadn't yet tried any of Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki Paris's sweets at the time, it was a gift of something I had always longed for.
Asami : When it comes to a special gift, it's important that the product itself is good, of course, but also that you put in extra effort and create a memorable experience. What are some of the gifts you've received in return for obligation chocolates that made you happy?
What are some perfect gifts that would make a boss or friend happy to receive?
Miyata: That's true, around White Day, you receive so many gifts in return that it's a shame you end up just "consuming" them. I was happy to receive a single chocolate with champagne inside from a colleague. When I received the bag, I thought, "Huh, is it really this small?" (laughs). I don't usually buy them myself, so a single, high-quality chocolate for 1000 yen leaves a stronger impression than a large quantity of chocolates for 1000 yen.
With obligation chocolates, receiving an overly expensive return gift can make you feel awkward, right? I think the price range is important. What I've been happy to receive so far are trendy gifts and unusual items like "stick chocolates that you enjoy by melting them in hot milk." It's nice to receive something I've never eaten before.

Yamazaki : Also, something that can be eaten on the spot might be good. Something that you can quickly eat and say "thank you" for might be a good and casual choice.
White Day gifts that don't consider the recipient's convenience can lead to unexpected confusion!

Miyata: I once received some chocolates with packaging that looked like they were just bought haphazardly, without any sense of care or attention to detail, and that was a bit... disappointing (laughs). It was obvious that they had just bought a large quantity so they could give them to anyone.
Asami, that's very informative! (laughs)
Yamazaki was a little surprised when she received homemade sweets from her boyfriend from her student days. She appreciated the thought, but she also thought, "I've been defeated in terms of feminine charm!" (laughs)
Uehara: That's amazing! For me, it's definitely things that are too big or too much in quantity. When you live alone, it's hard to finish everything, and it's sad when the joy of receiving something as a gift is halved.
Miyata: When products have a short shelf life and aren't individually packaged, it's a problem because you can't finish them all.
Its visually appealing design that doesn't look cheap, its buzzworthy nature, and thoughtful details like individual packaging are all highly praised!
Uehara: I'd be happy to receive something I couldn't or wouldn't buy for myself. Plus, if it's something interesting, like "Do you know this brand?" or "This flavor is limited edition," it makes it easier to start a conversation afterward.

When it comes to gifts like Yamazaki Valentine's Day chocolates or gifts from colleagues, the price range and appearance are what I'm most concerned about. If the price is too high, I feel a bit embarrassed, and if the appearance isn't appealing, it's a little disappointing (laughs). I don't actually check the price, so I'd be happy if the packaging looks high-class. Good packaging also elicits a bigger reaction on the spot, and it makes it easier to say thank you right then and there.
Miyata: I'd be happy with something that's on-trend. Many brands create special products for White Day, so I'd be thrilled to receive something that's only available during that time and is made with care and attention to detail. Valentine's Day and White Day are great opportunities to try things you've been curious about or have never eaten before.
