In an era where both personal and business matters can be handled with just a smartphone, what kind of bag should we carry to work every day? What functions are necessary for a work bag? What about the design? And, do we even really need a work bag in the first place? To find out, the bag specialist at ISETAN MEN'S store talked with business professionals of the same generation about the realities of what kind of bag is needed for daily work.

These four people participated.


Chiyano Fujimoto
He works for an advertising production company. Because he often carries documents and his laptop to interviews and meetings, he sometimes checks out the business bag section at ISETAN MEN'S to find a bag that he can use for work.


Katsuya Okazaki
She works for an event production company. "I usually commute with a backpack, but in the summer my back gets soaked, so I'm having trouble deciding what to do."


Ryuji Kanayama
She works for a staffing agency. She usually dresses in a casual business style, so a briefcase doesn't suit her. Therefore, she prioritizes functionality when choosing a bag.

Yuka Sakamoto
I work for a specialized trading company that deals in interior goods. I'm currently on maternity leave, so a functional, large-capacity diaper bag is a necessity for me. I plan to return to work next spring.

Kazuki Hayashibara
Since joining the company in 2014, she has dedicated herself to bags for six years. After working in retail sales, she is now also involved in purchasing and planning products. "If there are only black bags, the sales floor will look dark, so it's important to choose bags with a variety of colors."


What are your criteria for choosing a bag that you use on a daily basis, Mina Hayashibara? This can be for both work and personal use.
Okazaki: I prefer things that are as light as possible. If my bag is heavy, I feel like my steps become heavier too. But then again, I don't think it looks good to go to work empty-handed, so I always carry a bag with me.
For me, it's important that it's not too big when I hold it. I don't like it when it feels unbalanced when I hold it.
Sakamoto: I'm currently on maternity leave, but when I was working, I just needed a bag with a little room to fit my smartphone, wallet, and lip balm. When I return to work next spring, I'll have to take my child to and from daycare, so I'd like a large, self-standing bag that doesn't show the contents. Also, I want a wide strap that won't dig into my shoulder. Thin straps dig into my shoulder.
Because of the nature of my work, my computer is crammed with paper documents and other things, so I'm concerned about storage capacity.
