John Lawrence Sullivan resonates with post-punk music [Autumn/Winter 2019-20 Collection]

From January 5th (Friday) to 7th (Sunday), the 2019-20 Autumn/Winter London Men's Fashion Week was held. Starting this season, the main venue was moved to the former Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, the heart of East London. John Lawrence Sullivan, who held his show on the first day, set up Kachette, an event venue located under an elevated railway not far from the main venue, as the venue for his fifth collection presentation in London.

The event was a resounding success, with both the seated and standing areas completely full. The show began with a live performance by the UK-based band, Wild Daughter. Designer Arashi Yanagawa, who said he re-examined the close relationship between fashion, music, and subculture, presented a collection of sophisticated, modern punk styles this season, set to post-punk and gothic rock music.

What was particularly striking was the abundance of animal prints, including python, tiger, cheetah, and crocodile. Stylings that mixed these prints to an extreme degree graced the runway, but the beautifully tailored garments, which are the essence of John Lawrence Sullivan, resulted in urban and understated looks. Based on soft color palettes of earth tones such as beige and khaki, the collection was enhanced with vivid accent colors such as orange and red, and playful touches were added with a rich color palette, such as using glossy green lining inside long tailored coats. Designer Yanagawa appeared at the finale to thunderous applause.

London Men's Fashion Week saw a reduction in both the number of dates and brands compared to last season, but it remains a fiercely competitive arena for rapidly rising young designers such as A COLD WALL and CHARLES JEFFERY LOVERBOY. Amidst this, John Lawrence Sullivan is establishing his own unique position.
