What do people who improve at golf have in common?
—A friend once told me, "Ota, you're the type to get really into anything (laughs), so if you get into golf, you'll get good at it." Are there any common characteristics among people who become good at golf?
First and foremost, they are honest and receptive. They are people who can put into practice what the instructor teaches them without questioning it. I heard a story about a housewife who had just started playing golf and didn't have much experience on the course, but her friends praised her swing, saying it was very beautiful. This was because she faithfully followed what her instructor told her.
Those who can do what their teacher tells them to do will ultimately become skilled. Also, those who are good at absorbing and processing information, and those who can eliminate unnecessary things when told, have the potential to become skilled.
--- Are there any mental strengths or weaknesses that make you suited to this?
Golf is a sport where "mind, technique, and body" are all integrated, and there are so many different aspects to it that it's difficult to find a satisfactory outcome. The more you master it, the deeper and more profound the sport becomes.
However, since Ms. Ota practices kendo, I got the impression that she has a strong core. If you learn the proper grip and practice consistently with a desire to improve, I think it's perfectly reasonable to aim for "breaking 100 in three years." There are individual differences, but we have a roadmap to help you achieve that.
---It seems like it would be best to try a private "course experience" sooner rather than later. I'm already eager to go! (laughs)
Once you actually play on a course, you'll start to appreciate even more how amazing the pros are and how skilled their approach shots are around the green, especially when you watch the Masters, one of the four major tournaments, in early April on TV.
---Okay, I'll give the course trial a go!
With many of her questions and anxieties answered, Ota seems very interested in experiencing the course. She continues to practice every day, and in the next installment of "[Series] Beginner Golf Navigation - The Road to Your First Round #Round 3," we will bring you her experience on the actual course!
