[Interview] DEREK ROSE Sasha Rose | British comfort wear where attention to detail and intelligence shine through in every aspect.

Derek Rose, the British brand famous for its pajamas and nightwear, has grown into a total comfort wear brand using high-quality materials under the leadership of Managing Director Sacha Rose, the third generation to take over the business.
Sasha, who has been involved in the brand business since 2003 and launched a T-shirt in 2009 that became a huge hit, introduces the brand, which has corners in high-end department stores such as Selfridges and Harrods in London and Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and exhibits at Pitti Immagine Uomo as a contemporary loungewear brand, and is also available at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , Men's Building, B1F (underwear, nightwear, socks).

The brand concept is smart comfort.

Derek Rose was founded in 1926 by Sasha's grandfather. "Then my father became the second generation in 1953, and to establish it as a family business, he named the brand after his father, Derek Rose. Until the second generation, pajamas were the main product, but in my generation, I expanded the collection to include loungewear such as T-shirts and gowns, as well as underwear," says Sasha.

"Derek Rose's brand concept is Smart Comfort. The concept embodies meanings such as intelligence, relaxation, and luxury," he explains.

What Sasha inherited from her father, Derek Rhodes

—I was surprised to hear that the brand name is your father's name.

What I inherited from my father in business, besides the brand name, was the importance of having a clear product concept and controlling everything from the fabric and design to the sewing. I also learned the importance of family connections. This extends to the business as well; the dozen or so people in the London studio, the 30 or so people in the UK factory, and the two employees in the Czech factory are all part of my precious family. A designer is permanently stationed in the London studio, where they create original fabrics and prints.

The pursuit of comfort born from rational and well-thought-out design.

—Since
Sasha took over, you've focused on items like loungewear and casual wear, in addition to pajamas.

I took over the company in 2003, and we launched T-shirts in 2009 and underwear in 2013. We spent about two years conducting various research to develop the underwear, and from the question, "Does anyone actually fasten the buttons on the front of classic boxer shorts * ?", we adopted magnets for Derek Rose. The magnets open vertically, but not horizontally.

—Are you always thinking about such improvements and innovations?

Absolutely. Buttonholes on shirts and pajamas are usually vertical, but Derek Rose's pajamas have horizontal buttonholes, a design that's been around since my grandfather's time, to prevent them from coming undone while sleeping. I'm always thinking about how I can make things better, because being complacent is the scariest thing.

—Pajamas
are generally perceived as a finished product, but is there still room for improvement?

Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building B1F - The Modern Fit Pajamas, available in the underwear, nightwear, and socks sections, are a breakaway from classic styles. They can be worn like a shirt jacket, as outerwear, or even as party wear.

—And that includes the idea that "the wearer is not bound by conventional thinking."

That's right. At Derek Rose, we also make cashmere sweat suit sets, but I created them because I didn't want to wear sweat suits with sports manufacturer logos on them when I went for tea or a meal after playing squash or tennis at a gentleman's club. That's how we think, create, wear, and then make improvements.

I want to create more unique and personalized products.

--What kind of pajamas do you wear to bed, Sasha?

That's an interesting question. Sleepwear has become very diverse, but since we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, I think it's very important. Are you familiar with the "pajama switch effect"? It's said that when you come home from a stressful day at work and change into pajamas or loungewear, it's like switching off and you can relax. It has such an impact on your mental state, so I highly recommend using Derek Rose pajamas. I personally sleep in a T-shirt and pajama pants.

T-shirt: 14,040 yen
*Scheduled to be released in early March

--So , do you have a message for our customers in Japan?

Derek Rose's best-selling T-shirts, known for their supple feel, will be available from early March. While the brand is famous for its pajamas, we aim to create more unique and personal products.

*All prices include tax.
