Who is Christopher Nemeth, the artist Kim Jones paid homage to?

Christopher Nemeth is one of London's greatest designers.
-- Kim Jones, Artistic Director of LOUIS VUITTON Men's Collection

"He embodies Savile Row, the face of the streets, art... his designs are London itself. Christopher Nemeth studied art and then entered the fashion industry as an illustrator, a path that I share with my own career. His influence can be seen in so many collections, but this is not widely recognized, and it seems that many people still don't know about him. That's why, as we mark the fifth anniversary of his death, I wanted to pay homage to Christopher Nemeth and his work in an open way through this season's Louis Vuitton collection."

Nemeth's signature "deconstruction" was destined to happen.

Christopher Nemeth (1959-2010) entered the world of art with a free-spirited approach, unconstrained by conventional boundaries. Born in Birmingham, England, he moved to London in 1979 to study painting at Camberwell College of Arts. After graduating, he began making his own clothes, teaching himself pattern cutting. He created garments using canvases for paintings, discarded postal bags, or fabric from old suits, all made by hand.

The clothes he created all became signature pieces that characterized the early "deconstructed" style. While the concept of deconstruction was a groundbreaking style in the world of fashion design, it was an inseparable technique from his work as an artist. His artwork also features themes related to clothing making, such as the process of making clothes, needles and thread, the weave patterns of fabrics, and hands at work.

A style icon born in a chaotic era. Emerging from the world of magazines, she became a household name.

From the very beginning of his clothing design career until the mid-1980s, Christopher Nemeth continued to create pieces that embodied the spirit of London. His "make-do-and-mend" philosophy—using what he had and mending when it was torn—his non-reliance on brands, his creativity that maximized his potential, and his "homecraft" filled with an indomitable rebellious spirit—all of these were essential to the London of that time, which was suffering in the midst of recession and poverty. Even during the worst of times, he was literally "discovered" through the power of the individuality he put into the clothes he made himself and the individuality he infused into his designs.

One day, photographer Mark Lebon spotted this young artist riding a bicycle, wearing unique, handmade clothing. Already a regular contributor to magazines at the time, Mark Lebon immediately hit it off with Christopher Nemeth. Lebon then, together with stylist and accessory designer Judy Blame, featured Nemeth's clothing in his magazine, introducing this up-and-coming designer.

By that time, Christopher Nemeth was thinking about designing clothes not for himself, but for other people, and putting them out into the world. By the early to mid-1980s, Nemeth had already become a household name in Kensington Market, another creative hub in London.

Tokyo, a place where we have continuously delivered products crafted with passion and dedication.

In 1986, Christopher Nemeth moved his base to Tokyo, and until the end of his life, he continued to reflect a spirit of creativity and craftsmanship in his work without compromise.

Like many designers who have experienced the connection between London and Tokyo, centered on creativity, Nemeth's work has also been refined and given new life by the Japanese culture he witnessed. With his memory in mind and in remembrance, Louis Vuitton this season carries on the craftsmanship and creativity he cherished in the form of fashion. It is an homage to Christopher Nemeth, one of the pioneers who played an active role at the forefront of the fashion world with his visionary spirit.

Kim Jones talks about his feelings towards Japan, Christopher Nemeth, the pop-up store, and the story behind the creation of limited-edition items.

Kim Jones, Artistic Director of LOUIS VUITTON Men's Collection, spoke about the background and motivations behind opening a limited-time store at Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , as well as his homage to Christopher Nemeth and the current collection.

I love visiting Japan. I've been there at least 75 times. It's the perfect place to find out what's trending, and I love the people, the culture, and the food.

The pop-up store at Shinjuku Isetan, opening on August 26th, was designed in collaboration with the architecture department. We wanted a clean and modern feel, so we used glass and metal. The exterior looks like a giant trunk, and when you enter the store, there are video screens and glass. The important thing is that it looks sophisticated and fresh.

Christopher Nemeth is from London, but he met his future wife in Japan and moved there in the late 1980s. He and Japan had a very strong bond. He's not a designer everyone knows, but he has a cult following in Japan. This project is to celebrate his achievements.

For the Isetan Shinjuku Store, Men's Building , I designed a special monogram featuring Nemeth's circular rope motif. This is because Isetan is a very influential department store in Japan and carries truly wonderful products. I wanted to offer something special and chic. I focused on a lineup of smaller bags and similar items. I wanted to make it accessible to everyone, so that anyone could enter the store and buy something. In Japan, even young people are very fashion-conscious. I wanted to offer something that young people could afford, not just those with money to spare. That's how the idea started.

The monogram combined with the circular print is truly beautiful. I'm happy to be able to offer something special. After all, this is a special project.
